My Hero Academia: Every Power Inside One for All, Ranked

In My Hero Academia, Izuku Midoriya receives the power One for All, which allows him to pursue his dream of becoming the top hero. However, it’s later discovered that One for All isn’t just one power – it contains multiple Quirks inherited from previous users. Initially without any Quirk of his own, Midoriya eventually gains access to seven different abilities. Season 5 of the anime reveals he can utilize the Quirks of each past user, and he does so during his climactic battle with Tomura Shigaraki, with some abilities proving more helpful than others.

While My Hero Academia quickly shows Deku becoming skilled with his powers, they create exciting fight scenes in the later seasons, letting him do much more than just basic attacks when facing enemies. The combined Quirks of One for All make Deku a powerful hero. However, when looking at each ability individually, some are clearly more useful and effective than others.

7) Smokescreen

Midoriya gains the Quirk Smokescreen from a previous One for All user, En Tayutai. This ability lets him create a cloud of purple smoke to conceal himself and his surroundings. It’s useful for defense, allowing him to hide, and can also blind or distract enemies. Deku successfully uses this Quirk, combined with his Danger Sense to stay aware within the smoke, to overcome opponents like Muscular and Lady Nagant during the Dark Hero arc.

Smokescreen has some clear weaknesses when used alone. It can actually blind the user if they’re not cautious, making it a potentially dangerous ability despite its usefulness for hiding. It’s also easily dispersed, as seen when Bakugo quickly breaks through it during the fight with Deku. Furthermore, Smokescreen isn’t effective for attacking. Considering these drawbacks, it’s likely the least powerful of all the Quirks within One For All.

6) Float

Float is a Quirk inherited from Nana Shimura, the seventh user of One For All and All Might’s teacher, and it’s especially helpful when fighting Shigaraki. As the name suggests, Float lets Midoriya hover and fly, a valuable skill for a hero. Throughout My Hero Academia, this ability proves crucial because Shigaraki’s Quirk causes decay to anything he touches, even things connected to the original object. Float allows Deku to avoid touching the ground when Shigaraki uses his power, and when combined with Blackwhip, it helps him rescue people from the villain’s attacks.

Float isn’t a particularly strong Quirk on its own, lacking significant offensive or defensive capabilities. However, it becomes much more useful when combined with other Quirks. For example, paired with increased speed, a user could easily dodge attacks while airborne, launch aerial attacks, and cover large distances. While not as powerful as some of the other Quirks within One for All, Float offers more versatility than Smokescreen.

5) Fa Jin

In Season 6 of My Hero Academia, Midoriya gains access to Fa Jin, the Quirk of the third user. This ability lets him store kinetic energy by repeatedly performing the same action. Once enough energy is built up, he can release it through any part of his body, dramatically increasing his speed and strength. We see him use Fa Jin effectively during his fight with Lady Nagant and throughout the Final War arc. What’s more, combining Fa Jin with his other Quirks makes him even more powerful than using it on its own.

Fa Jin is a powerful offensive ability, but it has some drawbacks. It requires a charge-up time, which can be a problem in sudden fights. Even with preparation, users need to replenish their energy between uses, and that’s not always feasible during a battle. This makes it hard to rely on Fa Jin consistently.

4) Danger Sense

Similar to Spider-Man’s Spidey sense, Deku’s Danger Sense is a powerful ability that warns him of nearby threats. Originally used by the fourth holder of One for All, it allows the user to sense anyone with hostile intentions. This early warning system lets Deku react to attacks before they even happen, saving him countless times. While it’s not an offensive power, it doesn’t need to be – simply avoiding an attack gives Deku a significant advantage.

While Danger Sense is incredibly helpful, its reliance on the emotions of nearby people can actually be a weakness. Someone skilled at hiding their true intentions could avoid detection, and strong emotions like anger – even from harmless people – could trigger false alarms. Despite these limitations, it often proves to be a crucial ability for survival.

3) Gearshift

The anime My Hero Academia is building anticipation to fully showcase Gearshift, the powerful ability inherited by the second user of One for All, Toshitsugu Kudo. It’s understandable why – Gearshift is likely the strongest skill within One for All, giving Deku the power to break the rules of physics and change how fast things move. While it’s a complex ability, Midoriya demonstrates its potential by using it to significantly boost his speed and strength during his battle with Shigaraki. Gearshift lets him achieve incredible feats, especially when used alongside his other Quirks.

As a huge fan of One For All, it’s amazing how powerful Gearshift is, but it definitely comes with a serious downside. It pushes Izuku’s body to its absolute limit! We learn from Kudo that he can only really use it for about five minutes at a time, and we see just how true that is during the Final War arc. It’s a one-and-done kind of move, meaning he has to save it for the perfect moment. That’s why, even though it’s the strongest of the Quirks, it doesn’t rank as highly as some of the others – it’s just too risky to use freely!

2) Blackwhip

Despite being presented as Deku’s most powerful ability within One for All, Blackwhip actually has a greater reach and can be used for extended durations. This Quirk, which first appeared in Season 5 and revealed Deku’s access to multiple abilities, comes from Daigoro Banjo, the fifth wielder of One for All. Blackwhip allows the user to generate tendrils from their body, offering versatility in both attack and defense, making it Midoriya’s most adaptable Quirk.

Throughout the anime, Midoriya finds many uses for his Blackwhip Quirk. He uses it to tie up villains, rescue his friends, swing between buildings, and attack enemies. It’s a very strong ability, and Deku even relies on it to keep moving when Gearshift pushes his body to its limits. While its effectiveness is tied to his mental and physical state—he can lose control when distressed—Blackwhip also becomes more powerful when he focuses his energy. Ultimately, it’s the most versatile Quirk within One For All, even if it isn’t the strongest in terms of raw power.

1) One for All

One For All is an incredibly powerful ability in My Hero Academia, and it’s the source of Midoriya’s access to six different Quirks. While Midoriya struggles to use One For All at full power without injuring himself, he still achieves a lot with it. The way One For All stores power not only strengthens the Quirks of previous users but also allows them to work together, giving Midoriya a significant edge. It also provides immense strength and speed, which both All Might and Midoriya utilize. Ultimately, Midoriya’s journey wouldn’t be possible without this power, and the world of My Hero Academia might have succumbed to villainy.
