Even though the main My Hero Academia story has finished, a spin-off series is exploring the past of the character Shota Aizawa in its second season. This spin-off, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, written by Hideyuki and illustrated by Court Betten, will be adapted into an anime as part of the Spring 2025 season. The story is set five years before the original manga by Kohei Horikoshi, a time when superpowers had become widespread, but so had crime – even heroes were struggling to keep up.
This story features new characters who couldn’t become officially licensed heroes, so they fight crime in secret, protecting areas the established heroes overlook. The anime previously introduced Shota Aizawa, a popular character from the main story. While the original story only hinted at a tragic event from his high school years involving a close friend, the spin-off dedicates an entire story arc to exploring Aizawa’s past as a hopeful hero.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Shed More Light on Aizawa’s Past

Aizawa shared a heartwarming moment with Koichi over a cat, which reminded him of his high school years with friends Hizashi Yamada (Present Mic), Oboro Shirakumo, and Nemuri Kayama (Miss Midnight). They once worked together to rescue a stray cat from the rain, getting soaked in the process, but succeeding as a team. The story then delves into their early days as future heroes, showing them facing tough villains and gaining experience through hero work studies.
Aizawa’s past is marked by the heartbreaking loss of his friend, Shirakumo, which deeply affected him and motivated him to become a hero he could respect. Shirakumo, a promising hero himself, inspired Aizawa’s path and even influenced the creation of his hero persona, Erasure Head, and his decision to become a teacher. Recognizing his own quirk wasn’t ideal for direct combat, Aizawa worked tirelessly to improve his fighting skills, as seen in earlier stories. Tragically, Shirakumo’s body was later altered and used as a powerful Nomu, becoming a major challenge for the heroes.
