Naomi Osaka is serving up a heartfelt reflection on her career.
A few days after the 27-year-old tennis player expressed she had no favorable comments regarding herself following her defeat in the third round at Wimbledon, she posted a reflection on her social media platforms highlighting her accomplishments during her career up to that point.
In her July 7 Instagram post, Naomi mentioned she had an extended chat with her father. During this discussion, something he shared left a deep impression on her.
The four-time Grand Slam champion shared that contemplating his own life had caused him to see his tennis career from a fresh perspective, which also applied to her.
She wrote that he shared with her his feeling that, being 59, he’s more towards the end of his life than the beginning. This perspective has made him want to savor and appreciate the years left. He found it intriguing as he believes our tennis careers might have a parallel.
Naomi, mother of two-year-old daughter Shai with ex Cordae, went on to explain, “When we initially discussed this matter, I looked at him in bewilderment, struggling to grasp what he was trying to tell me. To be honest, the subject itself caused me to feel anxious. However, after a few days, a sudden understanding struck me.
Namely, what it means to be 13 years into her professional career.
For most of her life, she has been devoted to tennis, starting at just three years old and turning professional at fourteen. Now, at 27, she admitted that she is more towards the end rather than the start of her career in this sport.
That’s why, for the tennis star, it’s important to focus on the positives.
In her younger days, Naomi’s heartfelt aspiration was to simply touch and peer within the US Open trophy, as its attainment felt like a magical story. Her mom had once shared a tale about the trophy containing fairy dust at its base. Fast forward, this athlete who claimed victory in 2018 and 2020, now possesses not one but two of those coveted trophies. Incredibly, she has doubled her wildest dreams by fulfilling them twice over.
Changing her focus from past struggles to her accomplishments, she’s determined to break free from dwelling on setbacks in the future.
As an overly passionate admirer, I find myself trapped by the self-imposed pressure of my own ambitions and the expectations others have placed upon me. This burden has hindered my ability to fully appreciate each moment, regardless of its duration. Yet, here I am, making a solemn vow to myself – to savor the experiences, find tranquility in my travels, and revel in the joy of witnessing my daughter’s success, born from my hard work.
