The world of Naruto is plagued by constant warfare, disrupting the peace for generations. For centuries, ninja clans fought each other for different reasons, leaving little hope for a peaceful future. Though Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha founded the Hidden Leaf Village hoping to create understanding and peace, their vision never fully materialized. Following the Leaf Village’s example, other villages formed and created alliances. Instead of individual clans battling each other, these alliances led to large-scale wars between the Hidden Villages across the land.
The story unfolds in a world still recovering from three devastating wars. As the main narrative progresses, a fourth major conflict – the Fourth Great Ninja War – erupts. However, this war is different: instead of fighting each other, the ninja villages unite against a common enemy, Madara Uchiha. Each of these four great wars plays a crucial role in the overall story, and here’s a look at what actually happened during them.
4) The Hidden Leaf Village Lost Two Hokages in The First Great Ninja War

This war happened soon after the five major nations were formed and caused lasting chaos throughout the world. During the conflict, the Hidden Leaf Village lost its first leader, Hashirama Senju, though the circumstances of his death are still unknown. Shortly after, Hashirama’s brother, Tobirama, who became the Second Hokage, knowingly sacrificed himself to ensure the survival of his team. Before his death, Tobirama chose Hiruzen to be the Third Hokage, placing the future of the Village in his capable hands.
3) The Second Great Ninja War Gave Birth to The Legendary Sannin

Roughly ten years after the initial conflict, the villages found themselves at war again. Details about this war are scarce, but it was during this time that the three legendary Sannin became well-known. Though they didn’t defeat Hanzo, their courage and resilience in battle earned them widespread recognition. It was also during this war that Jiraiya discovered Nagato Uzumaki’s abilities and began training him, along with his close companions, Yahiko and Konan.
2) The Third Great Ninja War Featured Many Tragedies

The third war, which happened about ten years before the story begins, significantly shaped everything that followed. Yahiko’s death deeply affected Nagato, changing his life forever. Obito was also severely injured—nearly killed when crushed by a rock—and his friends and comrades constantly grieved for him. Tragically, Rin lost her life during the war, refusing to let the Hidden Mist Village exploit her as a weapon.
1) The Fourth Great Ninja War Ensured Peace Between Nations

For decades, the ninja world was divided, but the threat of Madara forced everyone to unite. The combined ninja forces battled against Madara Uchiha and his army of White Zetsu and reanimated warriors. The war was incredibly fierce, resulting in countless ninja deaths. Despite the tragedy, it was filled with some of the most thrilling and suspenseful moments in the entire series.
