Mid-Wilshire will have a new cause for celebration in The Rookie season 9.
ABC’s hit police drama, The Rookie, had a successful 2025-2026 season, even though it began later in the year. Season 8 started with a big premiere episode that sent some of the team to Prague for a mission. Fans also saw Nolan and Bailey finally get their honeymoon, and Lucy and Tim take the next step in their relationship by moving in together. The show’s creator, Alexi Hawley, kept viewers engaged with surprising plot twists, culminating in a dramatic cliffhanger involving the show’s main couple at the end of the year.
Fans are eager to see season nine of The Rookie reveal how the people of Mid-Wilshire will react to the kidnapping. While ABC likely won’t risk damaging such a popular show, it’s probable that Tim and Lucy will be rescued. However, The Rookie is also facing a significant shift that could greatly impact what happens next.
Deric Augustine recently told TV Insider that Miles Penn will officially become a fully-fledged police officer in season nine of The Rookie. He expressed excitement about watching Penn “adapt to being a really great police officer, as a P2, and having his independence.” The character has been working towards this for a couple of seasons, and the last episode of season eight nearly derailed his progress. Although Nyla Harper offered to help speed up the process, it wasn’t certain if he would actually graduate. You can find Augustine’s complete statement below.
He’ll probably be very happy to move past being a newcomer. We really saw him struggle and grow in Season 8, making lots of errors but learning from them. I’m looking forward to seeing his development – how he starts trusting the guidance of his coaches instead of just acting on impulse, and how he uses what he’s learned to improve.
I really enjoy working with Mekia. I’ve also been thinking about reconnecting with Tim – that could be great. It would be special to see Tim mentor Miles and then come back as a training officer just to celebrate Miles’s success, almost like he’s seeing things through from beginning to end. That idea appeals to me. But I also care about Nyla a lot.
It’s been several years since Nathan Fillion first played John Nolan in The Rookie. While Fillion is still the show’s main star, the series needs to consistently introduce fresh new rookies to maintain its core idea. Celina initially seemed poised to take over for Nolan, and then Miles joined after she graduated from the academy. However, neither Celina nor Miles has received the same in-depth character development that ABC gave to Fillion’s character, which is unfortunate given how much potential they both have.
The last few episodes of The Rookie‘s eighth season finally gave Celina a strong storyline of her own, and hopefully that continues when the show returns in 2027. However, the show really needs to focus on Miles, particularly since Augustine was absent for several episodes last season. He has a lot of potential, having been mentored by Tim, Nolan, and Nyla, and it’s great to see him developing into a more confident officer as the series goes on.
Fans will need to wait until 2027 to see what creator Alexi Hawley has planned for Miles and the characters in Mid-Wilshire. As with recent seasons, ABC is holding off on premiering The Rookie until after Christmas. However, all of the show’s main actors are confirmed to return – a welcome sign considering many other popular procedural dramas currently face uncertainty.
