The NBA has lost a bright star.
Brandon Clarke—who’s been playing on the Memphis Grizzlies since 2019—died on May 11. He was 29.
The Memphis Grizzlies expressed deep sadness over the unexpected death of Brandon Clarke in a statement released to TopMob News on May 12th. They remembered him as a wonderful teammate and a genuinely good person who made a significant positive impact on both the team and the Memphis community, and his contributions will be long remembered.
I was so saddened to hear the news, and the whole team wanted to share our heartfelt sympathy with his family and everyone who cared about him. It’s a truly difficult time for them, and we’re thinking of them all.
On May 11th, around 5 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a home in the San Fernando Valley for a medical emergency, according to NBC Los Angeles. Paramedics arrived and pronounced a person, later identified as Clarke, deceased at the scene.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m hearing reports about a concerning situation. Authorities discovered drug paraphernalia at a home and are currently investigating it as a potential overdose. It’s a stark reminder of the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of seeking help if you or someone you know is struggling.
After the passing of Clarke, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver honored him, noting his long service with the Grizzlies.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver shared a statement on May 12th saying Brandon was a well-loved teammate and leader known for his intense passion and determination. The league extends its deepest condolences to Brandon’s family, friends, and the Memphis Grizzlies.
Honestly, everyone who worked with Clarke always said he was the absolute best. They described him as the most supportive friend you could ask for – just a genuinely kind and helpful person. It wasn’t just about being a great athlete, he was a fantastic friend too, and I always loved hearing stories about how he treated people!

Priority Sports shared a statement on Instagram on May 12th expressing their deep sadness over the loss of Brandon Clarke. They described him as a beloved and kind person who was always there for his friends and family. They extended their heartfelt sympathy to his mother, Whitney, and all who knew and loved him.
The company shared that he brought immense joy to everyone who knew him, and his loss is deeply felt and impossible to express fully.
I remember watching Clarke back in high school at Desert Vista in Phoenix – he was incredible! He really shone, leading his team all the way to the state championship game in 2015. It was clear even then he had a bright future.
He began his college basketball career at San Jose State, playing for two years before transferring to Gonzaga.

Jaren Jackson Jr. was initially drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder as the 21st pick in 2019, but was immediately traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. He then signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension with the Grizzlies, where he continues to play as a versatile forward-center.
Clarke suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury in March 2023, but he recovered well and played in 64 games the following season. Unfortunately, he was limited to just two games in the most recent season due to injuries to his calf and knee.
Just one month before he died, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas for speeding and drug-related offenses, including possessing and trafficking a controlled substance.
Court records obtained by TopMob News show the case against Clarke was ongoing when he died. He was due to be formally charged on May 15th.
