A popular TV show is moving to Netflix, giving the streaming service access to a series with a remarkably long run.
For the first time, Netflix will begin streaming the original Law & Order series to its U.S. subscribers. While Netflix hasn’t announced which seasons will be available, promotional images for Seasons 8 and 19 have appeared on the platform. Law & Order will start streaming in the U.S. on April 20th.
The History and Legacy of Law & Order
Created by television producer Dick Wolf, Law & Order first aired on NBC in 1990 and quickly became a popular crime drama. The show was known for using current events as inspiration for its storylines and is credited with shaping the modern police procedural format. Episodes were typically divided into two sections: the initial police investigation and the subsequent courtroom trial.
Since it first aired, Law & Order has become incredibly popular, growing from a relatively unknown TV drama into a major entertainment franchise. It has spawned six spin-off series and been adapted for television in five different countries. The original Law & Order is nearing the end of its 25th season on April 30th, and its most successful spin-off, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, is heading into its 27th season finale on May 14th.
What’s Next for the Law & Order Franchise?
Sadly, the latest Law & Order: Organized Crime series will not be returning for a sixth season. The show, starring Christopher Meloni as Detective Elliot Stabler after he left the Special Victims Unit, has been cancelled. The news was confirmed on April 16th, almost a year after Season 5 first aired in 2025.
Giorgia Meloni reacted to the news on social media, saying, ‘Hi everyone. I just heard that Organized Crime won’t be continuing. I want to thank the fans who brought Elliot Stabler to life and supported the show, and welcomed him back… You’ve given me a career beyond my wildest dreams – almost 17 years!’
Now that his time with the show is over, many fans are already hoping Christopher Meloni will reprise his role as Stabler soon. He’s been such a key part of the series for so long, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, where Stabler first appeared nearly twenty years ago, is still popular, which leaves the possibility of him returning in the future.
But the success of the popular spin-off show could influence what happens next. The future of the original Law & Order series remains uncertain.
Law & Order is set to be available for streaming in the United States on Netflix beginning Apr. 20.
