NCIS Fans Get Big Streaming Surprise on Prime Video

For nearly two decades since its debut in 2003, NCIS has been a reliable mainstay on network television, consistently outperforming competitors in ratings for CBS. With millions of fans and over twenty seasons under its belt, the show is now synonymous with procedurals and often overshadows the fact that it was originally a spin-off from another successful series. Remarkably, this pioneering precursor to NCIS has recently found a new home on Prime Video‘s streaming platform, expanding its reach to a wider online audience than ever before.

Amazon’s Prime Video has recently made all 10 seasons of the CBS series, originally aired on NBC, titled JAG, accessible for streaming. This show, which aired from 1995 to 2005, follows the character Harmon Rabb (David James Elliott), a former pilot who works alongside other lawyers in the Judge Advocate General’s office of the U.S. Navy. Until this month, JAG was only available for streaming on Paramount+.

While there isn’t much shared content between JAG and NCIS, the former played a significant role in laying the groundwork for the latter. This was achieved through a special episode in JAG called a backdoor pilot, which introduced Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in two episodes of JAG in 2003. These episodes set up his character and eventually led to him leading the narrative of NCIS.

Ever since NCIS first graced our screens, JAG continued its journey for two more seasons before calling it quits. Fast-forward 22 years, and I can still catch NCIS on TV today, though Harmon has moved on from the series. CBS has taken this show to new heights, transforming it into a massive franchise with spin-offs like NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai’i, and NCIS: Sydney. Last year, they even introduced NCIS: Origins, featuring Austin Stowell as a younger version of Gibbs.
