Need for Speed Fans Get Bad News on “Shelved” Series

Supporters of the Need for Speed game series are disappointed as Electronic Arts (EA) appears to be drifting away from the racing franchise. The Need for Speed franchise is well-known in the world of racing, providing an arcade-style and frequently illicit racing experience that enthusiasts enjoy. Over time, the series has adopted various shapes, including street racing, action stories reminiscent of Fast and Furious, and a focus on online play. However, it’s noticeable that the series has been less active in recent times. In the past, the series was renowned for its consistency and dependability, with new games launched annually, and then every other year as we transitioned to the Xbox One and PS4 generation.

For three long years now, we haven’t seen a fresh installment in the Need for Speed series, with the last game being Need for Speed Unbound in 2022.

While some enthusiasts are growing anxious, there’s a possibility that the break from new Need for Speed games might be more prolonged than expected. Whispers have circulated about an unannounced Need for Speed title in production, but these claims seem uncertain. The servers for 2013’s Need for Speed Rivals, initially launched on Xbox One and PS4, are set to be deactivated this year. Moreover, Speedhunters, a car-centric online platform previously supported by EA as part of the Need for Speed franchise, has ceased updates since April of this year. Matthew Everingham, a contributor to Speedhunters, mentioned that EA halted funding for the site following the hiatus of the Need for Speed series.

Rumor has it that Electronic Arts (EA) has temporarily halted the development of Need for Speed.

According to a longtime contributor to Speedhunters, EA has paused the production of Need for Speed, and this decision seems to have also impacted the financial support for the Speedhunters website.

Furthermore, it’s been reported that EA will be shutting down the servers for NFS Rivals on October 7th.

The recent closure of popular Need for Speed games and withdrawal of funding from related assets has sparked concern among fans that Electronic Arts (EA) might be abandoning the Need for Speed brand altogether. This development, coupled with the reportedly turbulent production of Battlefield 6, suggests a potentially uncertain future for both franchises. However, only time will tell what transpires. It’s been rumored that Battlefield 6 has been challenging to develop and is likely taking up most of the teams working on it, such as Criterion. The expected release date for Battlefield 6 is before next spring, but it’s possible that Criterion will continue to work on the project post-launch to provide support after it hits the shelves.

Additionally, this predicament mirrors the situation faced by another well-known racing series, Forza Motorsport, which experienced a decline in support from Xbox as well. Despite Turn 10 Games continuing operations, it was announced that the main team behind Forza Motorsport had been dismissed. This is undeniably a challenging period for racing game enthusiasts; however, let’s keep our fingers crossed that Need for Speed doesn’t remain absent.
