After recently being revived, the popular Australian soap opera Neighbours is once again facing its last episode. Unfortunately, one of the show’s most famous characters won’t be appearing in it.
Neighbours boss Jason Herbison has revealed that Ryan Moloney, who played Toadie Rebecchi for 30 years, couldn’t return for the show’s final episodes, which were filmed in July.
I was really hoping to see Toadie back, but unfortunately, Ryan Moloney wasn’t available to reprise the role. The producers told me in TV Week that while he couldn’t appear, they did make sure to at least acknowledge his character.
Even though Toadie won’t be in the final episodes, several beloved characters from the show’s history are expected to make an appearance as the soap opera ends.
Fan favorites like Shane Ramsay (Peter O’Brien), Melanie Pearson (Lucinda Cowden), Jimmy Williams (Darcy Tadich), Ned Willis (Ben Hall), and Roxy Canning (Zima Anderson) are set to return for the final episodes, and there might be a few more familiar faces popping up as well.
Herbison hinted the episode will have some hidden references for dedicated viewers. He also explained why he chose to conclude the show differently this time, compared to the 2022 finale that aired before Amazon revived the series.
He explained, “I didn’t want to finish things like I did before.” He knew they were about to lose the Nunawading Studios and backlot, and that made this situation different from the last one.
As a huge fan of the series, I really wanted to create a finale that wasn’t just a full stop. I aimed for an ending that would allow the story to continue, potentially in new formats, without being completely dependent on studio decisions. That’s essentially what I tried to achieve with this final episode.
The soap opera will end on Thursday, December 11th. Amazon decided not to order any more episodes after fulfilling their initial commitment of 460, and the cancellation was announced in February.
After filming wrapped up in July, executive producer Charlie Herbison shared that Neighbours is a truly unique show. He said it had been an honor to create recent seasons for its dedicated fans worldwide, and the team was proud to have added 460 episodes to the show’s already impressive total of over 9,000.
We’re ending things on a positive note for the residents of Ramsay Street, hinting at exciting stories to come.
