Nelly Furtado is ready to turn off the stage lights.
The singer of “I’m Like a Bird” has announced she’s taking a break from performing live and touring for the foreseeable future.
She announced on Instagram on October 23rd that she’s taking a break from performing to focus on other creative projects and personal goals that feel like a better fit for what she wants to do now.
Oh my gosh, she actually thanked us! Can you believe it? She was talking about all the fun, the amazing community we’ve built together, and just… the wonder of it all, ever since Whoa, Nelly! dropped way back in 2000. Seriously, 2000! It feels like yesterday, and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s just… everything to me.
She said she’s loved her career and continues to enjoy writing music, seeing it as a passion she turned into a profession. She added that she’ll always consider herself a songwriter.
Nelly encouraged aspiring musicians, hoping the next generation of artists enjoys long and fulfilling careers filled with passion.
Even though the Grammy-winning artist is currently not touring, her popular songs are still being discovered and enjoyed by a new generation thanks to platforms like social media.
She described the recent rediscovery of her music as both surreal and incredibly happy. She’s really enjoying the chance to perform live again and has been amazed to see how much her music still resonates with people, which has renewed her faith in the power of music itself.
Nelly often praises her 22-year-old daughter, Nevis Gahunia, for helping her understand and use new technologies. Nevis is the daughter of Nelly and her former partner, Jasper Gahunia.
You know, it’s funny looking back. When my music first really took off on TikTok, my oldest daughter was just a teenager – around 16 or 17, I think! Honestly, I was a little out of the loop at the time. I was mostly at home with my youngest ones, focusing on baby life. It’s wild how quickly things change! Between being a mom to my teen and my little ones – a seven-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son – life is always full of surprises, especially when you co-parent with someone like Jerry.
In fact, Nelly noted that Nevis has come to play a pivotal role in her professional life.
She happily shared how fortunate she feels to have her daughter join her in the studio and assist with her work. She explained that collaborating with her child and creating something meaningful together is an incredibly rewarding experience.
