NES Game From 1991 Gets New Release, Makes Classic Trilogy Fully Accessible

A classic Nintendo game from 1991 is being re-released this week, completing a beloved trilogy and making it playable on today’s consoles. Although the NES was nearing the end of its lifespan in 1991 – with Nintendo focusing on the newer SNES – many developers continued to create games for it. Now, one of those later NES titles is getting a fresh release tomorrow.

Originally released by Hamster, Ninja Gaiden 3: The Ancient Ship of Doom is coming soon to Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5. This game, which debuted on NES in Japan and North America in the summer of 1991, fits chronologically between the first and second Ninja Gaiden titles. Though it received mostly positive reviews, Ninja Gaiden 3 was the last game in the series until a reboot in 2004 transitioned it to 3D graphics.

Hamster is continuing its “Console Archives” series with the release of Ninja Gaiden 3: The Ancient Ship of Doom. This new version of Ninja Gaiden 3 will feature enhanced options like customizable controls, quick saves, and improved visuals. It will be available for $7.99 starting tomorrow, April 23rd, on the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop.

The exciting part about Ninja Gaiden 3: The Ancient Ship of Doom being re-released is that it means all three original Ninja Gaiden games are now playable on something other than the NES for the first time. Nintendo had already made the first Ninja Gaiden and its sequel, Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos, available through Nintendo Switch Online. Fans have been asking for The Ancient Ship of Doom to be added to Switch Online too, but Nintendo hasn’t done that yet. So, this new release from Hamster solves that problem for now.

Nintendo might add Ninja Gaiden 3: The Ancient Ship of Doom to its Switch Online service in the future. We’ll let you know here on ComicBook as soon as we have confirmation.
