A highly anticipated graphic novel based on a famous true crime story, which Hollywood has been trying to adapt for twenty years, is finally in production. Netflix won a competitive bidding process with a deal worth over a million dollars to bring the story to the screen.
Currently, a director and writer haven’t been confirmed for the film. However, Zach Cregger, known for the hit horror movie Weapons, will produce Torso, a new take on the later career of Elliot Ness. Joining him as producers are Alex Hedlund and Nick Antosca from Eat the Cat, the company behind the true-crime series Candy and A Friend of the Family.
This Is Great News For Fans Of The Graphic Novels

Originally published as a six-issue comic series by Image Comics in 1998, Torso tells the true story of Elliot Ness after his time taking down Al Capone. The story follows Ness as he moves to Cleveland and investigates a serial killer who leaves dismembered bodies—and mocking notes for the police—in the river. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko (who are also executive producers on the new adaptation), with art by Bendis, the graphic novel was inspired by actual case files from the Cleveland Torso Murders. Bendis received these files—including photos, newspaper clippings, and interviews with Ness himself—from his boss at the newspaper where he worked.
Since 2013, many different filmmakers and actors have been considered for this project, including directors like David Lowery, Paul Greengrass, and David Fincher, and actor Matt Damon. There were even reports of multiple script drafts written by Ehren Kruger and Brian Helgeland. However, director Zach Cregger’s success with horror films like Barbarian and Weapons, along with his upcoming Resident Evil movie, makes his work on Torso especially promising and worth following.
