With the success of Project Hail Mary in cinemas, Hollywood is looking for similar stories. Netflix seems to have just the thing with a new film that captures the same spirit.
Shawn Levy, the director of the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, is partnering with Netflix again for a new science fiction movie. Called Somewhere Out There, Levy will produce the film through his 21 Laps production company. The script will be written by Max Taxe, who previously worked on Moonshot.
What Is Somewhere Out There About?
Netflix won a competitive battle to acquire the rights to an upcoming science fiction movie. The film has gained significant attention, boosted by director Dan Levy, and several studios were vying for it.
Currently, there isn’t an official summary for Somewhere Out There, but it’s being described as a moving science fiction story similar to the 2016 film Arrival. That movie, like Somewhere Out There, was produced by Shawn Levy. Levy also directed The Adam Project, a 2022 Netflix film about time travel and family, which marked his first collaboration with Ryan Reynolds.
Somewhere Out There tells the story of a father who is deeply saddened by the loss of his wife. He sends a message into space, and surprisingly, receives a response from somewhere beyond.
Director Levy, known for working with stars like Mark Ruffalo and Ryan Gosling, is preparing to release his new Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter, next May 28th. While several well-known actors are being considered for the role of a mourning father, no one has officially joined the cast yet.
The director has worked with Netflix before, notably as a producer and director on the hit show Stranger Things. He’s collaborating with them again on several upcoming projects. His production company is currently developing the comedy film One Attempt Remaining with Jennifer Garner and John Cena, as well as an adaptation of Evan S. Porter’s novel Dad Camp, directed by Kevin Jukobowski.
In 2023, news emerged that Levy was directing and producing a heist comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, under his 21 Laps banner. However, there haven’t been any further announcements about the film since then.
Arrival’s Impact Hasn’t Been Matched
Denis Villeneuve is now a highly praised director, largely due to his work on the Dune trilogy. However, he first gained recognition with the gripping thriller Prisoners in 2013, followed by the thought-provoking Arrival in 2016, before even beginning his journey to Arrakis.
The science fiction drama was inspired by Ted Chiang’s highly praised story, Story of Your Life, and featured Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, and Michael Stuhlbarg. The movie centers on a linguist recruited by the U.S. Army to find a way to communicate with aliens.
The movie was nominated for eight Oscars and won one for Best Sound. It remains a highly popular and well-regarded science fiction film. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 94% approval rating, and audiences scored it at 83%.
Few films have resonated with audiences like Arrival since its release in 2016. The new sci-fi film shares similarities with Arrival, featuring a scientist who must learn to communicate with aliens during a critical moment. It has already earned $642.1 million globally.
Somewhere Out There doesn’t have a release date.
