I’m so excited! As of March 25th, Netflix is finally adding all episodes of my all-time favorite sitcom. It was truly groundbreaking for its time, fearlessly addressing real issues that other shows avoided. It really connected with viewers because it wasn’t afraid to tackle tough topics and honestly, it still holds up as the best sitcom ever made, even after all these years.
Most people remember All in the Family, the classic sitcom featuring Rob Reiner, Jean Stapleton, Sally Struthers, and Carroll O’Connor. Inspired by the British show Till Death Do Us Part, the series revolved around Archie Bunker (played by O’Connor), a man who frequently argued with his family about current events as society rapidly changed. While the show wouldn’t likely be broadcast on television today, the topics it explored still feel relevant and important.
All in the Family Stands on a Tier of Its Own

No other TV show confronted the difficult issues explored in All in the Family so directly. The series fearlessly presented discussions about racism, sexism, class differences, homophobia, and the realities of family life in 1970s America, including topics like loss, grief, and mental health. Unlike most sitcoms of the era, which showed families as either flawlessly happy or hilariously flawed, All in the Family presented characters who felt genuinely authentic and relatable. As one viewer put it, the show’s main character, Archie, was particularly compelling because he evolved over time, gradually shedding his prejudiced beliefs and growing as a person.
All in the Family was groundbreaking in its honest portrayal of difficult issues facing American families. It used humor and relatable characters to show how people – and the country – needed to change and evolve. As one viewer put it, the show bravely confronted prejudice, exposing the ridiculousness and harm of racism – like in the episode where Archie discovers his friends are planning to burn a cross on Mike and Gloria’s lawn. This kind of storytelling was essential in the 1970s to help society progress.
It’s unlikely we’ll ever have another sitcom quite like All in the Family, but fans will be happy to know they can re-watch all the episodes very soon!
