Netflix Is About To Lose One of the Best Thrillers of All Time

Netflix regularly updates its selection of movies and TV shows, meaning content is always being added and removed. February has already seen several popular titles leave the platform, including Parasite, Mean Girls, and The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep. More content will be disappearing in the coming weeks, so viewers have limited time to watch some favorites, including a highly-rated thriller.

As a critic, I have to say David Fincher’s Zodiac is a truly gripping film, and it’s been great to see it available on Netflix since November. But sadly, that won’t last much longer. This masterpiece, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr., is leaving the platform on February 17th. It’s a fascinating, almost obsessive look at the real-life hunt for the Zodiac killer in the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 60s and early 70s, and it really centers on one man – a quiet cartoonist – who lets the case consume him, putting both his family and his mental state at risk as he desperately tries to solve the mystery.

David Fincher’s Zodiac Is a Masterpiece Slow-Burn Thriller

Even before Zodiac came out, David Fincher was known for gripping thrillers like Se7en and Panic Room. However, Zodiac truly cemented his reputation as a masterful director and remains one of his best films. The movie is a complete triumph, largely thanks to Fincher’s careful direction and commitment to realism. He created a remarkably believable and immersive 1960s and 70s San Francisco, and successfully captured the unsettling mood of frustration and paranoia surrounding the Zodiac case. Zodiac expertly builds suspense through uncertainty and the many frustrating dead ends of the investigation, focusing on the psychological impact of an unsolved mystery.

Despite strong performances from its talented actors, the film Zodiac wasn’t initially successful, earning only $84 million at the box office despite a $65 million budget and receiving little awards recognition. However, it has since become highly regarded as both a fantastic thriller and one of the best true-crime movies ever made, known for its disturbing look at human behavior and the search for truth. With a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it also ranks as one of director David Fincher’s highest-rated films.

The movie Zodiac is leaving Netflix on February 17th, but you’ll still be able to watch it! It’s also available on Paramount+, so it won’t disappear from streaming altogether. You can also rent or buy it online. As streaming services change, Zodiac might end up on a different platform later, but no announcements have been made yet.
