Catherine Zeta-Jones, known for her role in Wednesday, is taking the lead in a new, potentially very unsettling movie. Following her performance as Griselda Blanco in Cocaine Godmother (2017), the acclaimed actress is starring in a psychological thriller that’s generating buzz. The film is directed by the creator of a recent viral horror hit, and promises to be a gripping and disturbing cinematic experience.
According to Variety, Catherine Zeta-Jones will star in Cupid, a new psychological thriller directed by Tate Taylor (known for Ma and The Help). She’ll play an unconventional marriage counselor whose attempts to fix a struggling couple’s relationship take a dark and dangerous turn. While the couple hasn’t been cast yet, Zeta-Jones appears to be playing a complex, potentially villainous role, similar to Octavia Spencer’s character in Ma. Variety describes the plot as follows:
A couple struggling with their marriage seeks help from an unconventional counselor during a weekend retreat. Initially hopeful, their attempt to reconnect takes a disturbing turn as the counselor’s methods become increasingly harsh and threatening.
Filming for Cupid is scheduled to start either late this summer or early fall. Tate Taylor, known for directing films like The Help, Ava, and Ma (and its upcoming sequel starring Spencer), will direct. The screenplay is written by Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke, who also wrote Don’t Worry Darling. Taylor released a statement following the announcement that Catherine Zeta-Jones had joined the cast.
I hope you won’t need counseling again, but if you do and can manage it, that’s okay too. I’m really excited to work with Catherine on this project. She’s the perfect artist to tell this thrilling story.
