Fans of sci-fi will soon be able to stream a canceled series on Netflix that many believe deserves a dedicated following. Netflix has been adding more shows from NBC lately, including titles like Happy’s Place, St. Denis Medical, and The Hunting Party. On May 1st, all episodes of this particular NBC show, which didn’t last long on television, will become available.
The show is called La Brea, and it’s coming to Netflix soon, complete with its wild time travel and prehistoric mayhem. If you haven’t seen it, the series, created by David Appelbaum, follows a group of people who fall through a giant sinkhole in Los Angeles and find themselves in a dangerous, ancient world. La Brea first aired on NBC in 2021, but after mixed reviews, falling ratings during its second season, and rising production costs—plus the impact of industry strikes—NBC decided to end it with a shorter final season that finished in 2024. Now, all 30 episodes of La Brea will be available on Netflix starting May 1st.
NBC’s La Brea Is a Wild, High-Concept Sci-Fi Drama That Needs To Be Seen
Don’t expect La Brea to win any awards. Critics weren’t impressed – it scored only 29% on Rotten Tomatoes in its first season – and audiences gave it an average rating of 46% over its three seasons. However, while it’s not good television, it’s enjoyably bad, reminiscent of the fun, over-the-top sci-fi shows from the 1990s and early 2000s.
La Brea is built around a wonderfully silly idea: a giant sinkhole opens up in Los Angeles and sends people back to a dangerous prehistoric world. From there, things get even more over-the-top! The show relies heavily on familiar sci-fi and adventure tropes – think sudden portals, psychic powers, and government secrets – and even throws in a time paradox. While the storylines aren’t realistic, the characters are predictable, and the special effects aren’t great, that’s part of what makes it so fun. Fans affectionately call it “gloriously bad” and “pure dumb TV.” It’s an escapist blend of survival stories, family drama, and fantasy – complete with dinosaurs – that creates a fast-paced, addictive adventure with the potential to become a beloved cult classic.
What’s New on Netflix?
With a week still to go until La Brea premieres on Netflix, there’s plenty to watch in the meantime! Throughout April, Netflix has added a lot of new shows and movies. New TV options include the first seasons of Happy’s Place and St. Denis Medical, plus returning Netflix originals like Season 3 of XO, Kitty, Season 2 of Beef, and Big Mistakes. On the movie side, you can now stream films like the Mission: Impossible series, IF, Scream, Halloween Ends, and the new shark thriller Thrash.
