Netflix Is Officially Losing a Cult ’80s Sci-Fi Reboot Just Months After It Arrived

Sci-fi fans on Netflix are facing a disappointing February. The streaming service is removing a recently revived ‘80s sci-fi show – a show many felt was cancelled too soon – from its library after only six months. This leaves viewers searching for other ways to watch the series.

The reboot of Quantum Leap, created by Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt, arrived on Netflix in August, but it won’t be there for long. The show is leaving the platform on February 14th. Starring Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Song, the series continues the story of the original Quantum Leap, which aired on NBC from 1989 to 1993 and starred Scott Bakula. This new version picks up thirty years after Dr. Sam Beckett disappeared. The cast also includes Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park, Nanrisa Lee, and Ernie Hudson.

NBC’s Quantum Leap Reboot Successfully Brought the Cult ‘80s Sci-Fi Show Into the 21st Century

Bringing back a show decades after it ended is tough, but the new Quantum Leap did a good job. It felt true to the original series, immediately referencing past events and showing the new team trying to continue the work of the original project. Like the first Quantum Leap, each episode featured a new ‘leap’ where the main character experienced life as a different person in a different time. However, the reboot also broadened the story with modern technology and raised the stakes. This meant balancing the familiar episodic format with a larger, ongoing storyline about a risky, secret mission, more ambitious leaps, and consequences that had a bigger and more immediate impact on the present.

Okay, so the Quantum Leap reboot was a bit of a mixed bag with critics – it landed around a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. But honestly, audiences really seemed to connect with it, giving it a solid 73% rating. What I really appreciated was that it wasn’t just continuing the story of the original; it dug into genuinely emotional, character-focused narratives and had a fantastic cast that made you care. It built a loyal following, and surprisingly, Season 2 was even better – the storylines were richer and it felt more connected to the show we all loved. Which is why I was so disappointed to hear NBC cancelled it after two seasons, especially with viewership numbers declining. It felt like it had so much more potential.

Where to Stream Quantum Leap After It Leaves Netflix?

It’s still unclear where fans will be able to watch the show going forward. After being cancelled by NBC, the Quantum Leap reboot was hard to find until Netflix added both seasons in August and became the only streaming service offering it. Now, it hasn’t appeared on any streaming service’s February lineups, suggesting the show is temporarily unavailable and hoping another platform will pick it up soon.
