Netflix is Officially Losing One of the Greatest Sitcoms of All Time

Sitcoms are often considered the most comforting type of TV show. Whether you enjoy revisiting classics like Friends and Seinfeld, or laughing at newer shows like The Office and Abbott Elementary, they’re consistently enjoyable. However, fans of a particularly beloved sitcom will soon have to find a new way to watch it, as it will no longer be available on Netflix in a few weeks.

After a brief scare that almost saw it removed last year, the comedy series Arrested Development is leaving Netflix on March 15th. All five seasons and 84 episodes of the show, which follows the hilariously dysfunctional Bluth family after the father is imprisoned, will be gone. It’s a bit surprising, considering Arrested Development was one of Netflix’s first original series. The show originally aired on Fox from 2003 to 2006, and Netflix revived it for two more seasons in 2013 and 2019.

Arrested Development Is One of the Most Rewarding and Rewatchable Sitcoms Ever

When people talk about the best TV comedies, Arrested Development is often at the top of the list. From the beginning, the show was remarkably clever and complex, pioneering the use of ongoing storylines for laughs instead of just serious drama. Its jokes were often layered and subtle, with some punchlines taking multiple episodes – or even seasons – to land, like the recurring gag about money hidden in the banana stand or the character Ann Veal who everyone always forgets. This makes Arrested Development incredibly rewatchable, because you’ll continue to discover new jokes, hints about future events, and references to earlier moments with each viewing.

Beyond being highly rewarding and rewatchable, Arrested Development has a fantastic and hilarious premise. The show centers on Michael Bluth, the most level-headed member of the wildly eccentric Bluth family, as he tries to manage their failing real estate business and keep his chaotic relatives under control. The show’s perfectly cast ensemble is a major strength, with amazing chemistry between all the absurd characters. Even its weakest season, generally considered to be Season 4, still makes Arrested Development a remarkably strong, funny, and original comedy that’s worth checking out.

Where to Stream Arrested Development After It Leaves Netflix?

It’s still uncertain what will happen with Arrested Development. While Netflix has announced the show will be removed on March 15th, that notice hasn’t actually appeared on the show’s page yet, and some fans are hopeful a deal can be made to keep it on the platform – similar to what happened before when it almost left. If a new deal doesn’t work out, Arrested Development will likely move to another streaming service, but it’s too soon to say for sure.
