A critically acclaimed film that was overlooked during the 2024 Oscars is now available on Netflix. It’s considered a modern classic, boasting impressive scores of 97% from critics and 94% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – making it one of the best-reviewed movies of recent years.
Though it’s been widely praised by critics and viewers alike, this 2023 film tells the real story of how BlackBerry—the company that created the first smartphone—quickly became successful and then ultimately failed. Like movies such as The Social Network and Steve Jobs, BlackBerry is a well-made biopic that Netflix users shouldn’t miss.
Netflix Just Added BlackBerry – What It’s About
The new movie BlackBerry became available on Netflix on March 15th and is quickly becoming a favorite among viewers. Surprisingly, it has a higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes (96%) than the critically acclaimed The Social Network, often considered a landmark film of the 21st century. While The Social Network won three Oscars in 2011 – including awards for its screenplay and score – BlackBerry wasn’t even nominated for an Academy Award.
By 2010, most people were familiar with Mark Zuckerberg and the story of Facebook, but when the movie BlackBerry came out in 2023, few remembered how the BlackBerry was created. The film follows Mike Lazaridis (played by Jay Baruchel) and Doug Fregin (played by director Matt Johnson) as they develop the BlackBerry and search for someone to invest in their idea. They eventually team up with Jim Balsillie (played by Glenn Howerton), who becomes the company’s CEO and drives BlackBerry to become a global phenomenon.
One of the enjoyable things about the movie BlackBerry is that it’s funny and takes place in the early 1990s, while also being based on a true story. It’s a charming but also gripping film about a group of underdogs who disrupt the business world with their groundbreaking BlackBerry smartphone. However, the film also has a bittersweet side, as it shows how BlackBerry went from being the world’s top smartphone maker to completely stopping production in 2016.
BlackBerry Deserved To Be In 2024’s Oscar Race
Though it takes some creative liberties with the truth, the movie BlackBerry is an engaging and surprisingly funny story. When it came out in November 2013, many thought it could be a dark horse contender in the 2024 Oscars. At the very least, it generated awards talk for the actors, especially Glenn Howerton, who brought a lot of the same energy to his role as Jim that made his character Dennis Reynolds on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia so popular.
The movie BlackBerry could have been considered for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, as it was based on the book Losing the Signal by Sean Silcoff and Jacquie McNish, and adapted by Johnson and Matthew Miller. However, BlackBerry didn’t receive any Academy Award nominations. Despite this, Glenn Howerton was nominated for his supporting role by both the Independent Spirit Awards and the Gotham Awards.
Both BlackBerry and the sports drama The Iron Claw are excellent films recently added to Netflix – and both were surprisingly overlooked by the 2024 Oscars. It was a competitive year for awards, with big hits like Barbie and Oppenheimer alongside critically acclaimed movies such as Poor Things, Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall, and The Zone of Interest. Still, BlackBerry is now available to stream and is a top pick for what to watch on Netflix this week.
