Netflix has had an excellent year for original films, and it’s continuing to improve. After strong starts with movies like Havoc and Happy Gilmore 2, the platform has maintained that success all year. Following the impressive performance of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix recently released a sequel to one of its most popular films ever, and it’s quickly climbing the streaming charts.
I was so hyped for Troll 2 after loving the first one on Netflix in 2022, and it definitely didn’t disappoint! It took three years to make, but it was worth the wait. The movie came out on December 1st and instantly became a huge hit, shooting straight to the Top 10. In fact, it hit number one worldwide within a day, and it’s stayed there ever since! According to FlixPatrol, it’s even beating out other popular titles like Jingle Bell Heist, The Rats: A Witcher Tale, Champagne Problems, and the original Troll, which are all in the Top 5 right now.
Troll 2 Is a Streaming Success Despite Being a Critical Letdown
Let’s be upfront: if you’re hoping for a fun, action-packed movie, Troll 2 delivers… in a bizarre way. While it continues the story and expands on the troll mythology from the first film, it didn’t quite live up to the hype. Critics and audiences didn’t love it, giving it low scores on Rotten Tomatoes (58% and 39% respectively) – a significant drop from the original. Many found it to be a dull and uninspired sequel, lacking the unique appeal of the first Troll movie.
Critics had mixed reactions to the new Troll movie. Charlie Ridgley from ComicBook gave it a 3 out of 5, noting it wasn’t as good as the first film and looked less impressive, but also wasn’t a complete failure. He felt it didn’t really add anything new. Netflix Life surprisingly called it a good sequel, while Blu-ray.com’s Brian Orndorf said the story felt a bit forced, but the troll action scenes were still enjoyable and saved the movie.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, the new movie’s popularity on streaming platforms isn’t surprising. The first Troll film was a huge hit, earning a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming Netflix’s most-watched foreign language movie with over 103 million views. Because of that success and the original’s reputation as a great monster movie, people were eagerly awaiting the sequel, and its current performance is exactly what was expected.
Will There Be a Troll 3?
Following the popularity of Troll and Troll 2, Netflix might be starting a successful monster movie series. While a third film hasn’t been confirmed, Troll 3 seems likely, as the second movie left the story open for a continuation.
