Get ready for a real Scooby-Doo! Netflix has shared a sneak peek of the upcoming live-action movie, Scooby-Doo: Origins, and it shows a real dog playing Scooby! Unlike the live-action movies from the early 2000s, this new film won’t rely on computer-generated imagery for the famous pup.
A new TV show will reveal how the members of Mystery, Inc. first met. The story begins with Daphne Blake, Shaggy Rogers, Velma Dinkley, and Fred Jones spending a summer at Camp Ruby-Spears. They team up to solve a spooky murder that a Great Dane actually saw happen. Netflix shared a quick video introducing the adorable Great Dane—you can watch it below—showing the pup sniffing around the woods before Shaggy finds and picks him up. Get ready for some serious cuteness!
It’s A New Era For Scooby-Doo

As a lifelong Scooby-Doo fan, it’s been a bit disheartening to see what’s happened with the franchise lately. They tried to reboot things in 2020 with ‘Scoob!’, but the release was really complicated by the pandemic – it came out both in theaters and digitally at the same time. It only made about $28 million at the box office, even though it did pretty well as a digital rental, especially considering it cost around $90 million to make. Then they actually made a sequel, ‘Scoob! Holiday Haunt’, but HBO Max decided to just cancel it as a cost-cutting move. Apparently, the movie was finished, but we’ve never actually gotten to see it, which is a real shame!
Okay, so HBO Max put out this show called Velma, which was a totally different take on the Scooby-Doo universe – an adult animated series. Honestly, it didn’t even have Scooby in it! And it really didn’t land well with anyone – critics and fans alike thought the characters were off and it just wasn’t the Scooby-Doo we all know and love. Sadly, it got cancelled after only two seasons. It was a swing and a miss, in my opinion.
The current trend of reimagined properties leads us to Scooby-Doo: Origins, which seems to be getting the live-action adaptation right. Created by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, the series will give the characters fresh backstories and update some details, but promises to stay true to the spirit of the original. According to Netflix, the story begins with Daphne and Shaggy as camp friends who team up with Fred, a newcomer, and Velma, a local science enthusiast, to investigate a possible supernatural murder. This investigation quickly spirals into a frightening ordeal and risks revealing hidden truths about each of them.
This is the first time a real dog has played Scooby-Doo, and it’s already proving to be a great decision – they’re incredibly cute!
The new Scooby-Doo movie, titled Scooby-Doo: Origins, is planned to come out on Netflix in 2027, giving fans lots of time to prepare with their favorite Scooby Snacks!
