The comic book series Something is Killing the Children remains incredibly popular and a major success for BOOM! Studios. Although a previous deal with Netflix didn’t result in a TV show, that may be changing now that the series has found a new home. Despite Netflix’s efforts to retain the rights, another company is now involved, and this could be a very positive development for the franchise.
The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Netflix has lost the rights to the comic book series Something is Killing the Children. The project will now be developed by Blumhouse, known for successful horror movies like Five Nights at Freddyâs and Black Phone. Blumhouse plans to create both a live-action movie and an animated series for adults based on the comic.

This is major news for a franchise with a lot of promise for both films and TV series. Originally developed at Netflix with creators like Mike Flanagan, Baran bo Odar, and Jantje Friese, the series wasn’t picked up by the streaming service. After Lionsgate showed interest, Netflix reconsidered, but ultimately Blumhouse won the rights to the franchise, taking over from a potential deal with Netflix’s movie division.
The TV adaptation is in good hands with James Tynion IV, who wrote the original series and will also produce the show alongside Stephen Christy. Werther DellâEdera, the seriesâ co-creator and artist, will also be a producer. Shaun Sutton, Ryan Turek, Adam Yoselin, and Mette Norkjaer will serve as executive producers.
Although Netflixâs support was valuable, getting the series started proved challenging, as evidenced by the number of different creative teams involved. Now, with the help of Netflixâs film division and a partnership with Blumhouse, the future looks brighter. They’re clearly enthusiastic about expanding the franchise across multiple platforms. The source material â including the main comic series, various short stories, and the popular spin-off, House of Slaughter â provides a solid foundation for both movies and a TV series.
James Tynion IV says the comic book Something is Killing the Children had a profound impact on his life and work. He’s thrilled to be partnering with Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, believing they truly understand horror and will help bring the world he and Werther DellâEdera created, centered around the character Erica Slaughter, to a wider audience. Finding someone who understood the potential of the story was key, and he feels theyâve found that in Blum.
Stephen Christy of BOOM! Studios called the partnership with Blumhouse to develop Something Is Killing the Children a major achievement. He emphasized that Jason Blum prioritized the creatorsâ vision, which was incredibly important to BOOM! Studios. Having worked with the creators since the beginning, they’re thrilled to collaborate with Blumhouse to bring the story to film and television, seeing it as the result of years of dedication and belief in the project.
If you haven’t read Something is Killing the Children before, it follows Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter who belongs to the Order of St. George. This group hunts dangerous monsters that appear because of people’s fear and painful experiences, and these monsters are only visible to children. The Order works to destroy these threats and keep them secret, and sometimes, people hurt by the monsters end up becoming hunters themselves â that’s how Erica started her career.
The world of Something is Killing the Children is incredibly detailed, with a deep history for its organization and everything they do. Throughout the series, the creative team has added layers of fascinating ideas, emotional scenes, and memorable characters. There’s a lot to discover, and if the upcoming film and show can capture the right atmosphere, look, and feel of the characters, this could become a long-lasting and successful franchise. You can find the first volume of the comic right here.
