Currently, ‘Reacher’ is one of the most popular crime thriller series on streaming, but Netflix has two new shows that could easily fill the void if ‘Reacher’ weren’t around.
Prime Video has consistently been a top streaming service for action and crime dramas, especially those featuring strong male leads, starting with its successful adaptations of the Harry Bosch and Jack Ryan book series. Recently, they’ve really focused on this type of show, releasing one popular series after another.
Currently, Reacher is the biggest success on Prime Video, consistently earning positive reviews and attracting a large audience. Although Netflix doesn’t quite match Prime Video’s success in this genre yet, two of its action thrillers stand out as potential competitors to Reacher.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole & The Night Agent On Netflix Are Both Worthy Reacher Rivals
Many viewers thought The Night Agent could fill the void left by the Reacher series, and now Netflix’s Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole is also being compared to it. While Reacher often features an outsider, both The Night Agent and Detective Hole focus on characters working within established systems. Detective Hole specifically centers around a detective who is a member of the Oslo Police force.
Detective Harry Hole, similar to Jack Reacher, isn’t afraid to bend the rules when solving crimes. While Peter Sutherland generally tries to do what’s morally right, Harry Hole is more like Reacher and will often cross ethical lines in his pursuit of justice.
Like Peter Sutherland in The Night Agent, Harry Hole in the Netflix series Detective Hole doesn’t become a rogue vigilante. However, the show does feature moments where he clashes with his colleagues and the authorities he’s meant to support.
Unlike detectives like Reacher and Sutherland who travel frequently, Harry Hole’s investigations usually take place in one specific area of Norway. Despite this, Hole shares a similar challenge with both of them: his dedication to his work makes it difficult to maintain lasting personal relationships. His cases often consume him, preventing him from building long-term romantic connections.
I’ve always been fascinated by Harry Hole as a detective. He’s not quite the unstoppable force that Jack Reacher is, nor does he move and adapt as quickly as Peter Sutherland, but he’s brilliant in his own way. What really sets him apart is how completely he gets lost in a case, and how he’s willing to bend the rules a little – or even cross them – to do what he believes is right. It makes him just as effective as those other guys, honestly.
Given the many similarities between Reacher, The Night Agent, and Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, it’s clear these three shows are strong competitors in the crime thriller genre.
Prime Video’s Still The King Of Dad Shows, But Netflix Is Building A Solid Library
As a big fan, I’ve been really impressed with The Night Agent. It had a fantastic first season, and even though it started doing its own thing with the story after that, it’s actually gotten better with each new season! It really feels like this show has a long and successful run ahead of it. Speaking of strong starts, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole reminded me a lot of The Night Agent in that way – it totally nailed its first season, got great reactions from both viewers and critics, and is almost certainly going to be back for a second season on Netflix.
When it comes to both reviews and how well shows are watched, Netflix’s crime thrillers haven’t quite reached the popularity of Prime Video’s Reacher and Bosch yet.
Prime Video isn’t just great for addictive crime thrillers like Reacher and Bosch; it also offers other popular series such as Cross and Jack Ryan. New shows building off those stories, like Neagley and Ballard, are also really good, making Prime Video the top streaming choice for action and suspense fans – especially dads.
However, Netflix is gaining traction with its adaptations of popular crime thrillers. It’s still too early to know what will happen with shows like The Night Agent and the Detective Hole series based on Jo Nesbø’s novels, but they both have the potential to become major franchises, similar to Reacher.
