Netflix Officially Losing One of Its Biggest Shows (Despite Making the Revival)

As a movie buff, it always bugs me when shows vanish from Netflix – and now one of my favorites after ten years is going! It’s just a frustrating part of streaming these days; things aren’t permanent. A show can disappear because another platform grabs it, or sometimes it just… vanishes for a while. The worst is when you’re halfway through a series and suddenly can’t finish it without getting another subscription. Seriously, it happens all the time!

It’s especially disappointing when a favorite show is removed from streaming, and that’s happening with Gilmore Girls on Netflix. The series will no longer be available after June 30th, 2026, meaning fans in the U.S. have until then to watch it. Netflix announced the news on X (formerly Twitter) with a farewell message: “We are sorry to say that Gilmore Girls Seasons 1-7 will be leaving Netflix in the US on June 30. Raising a cup of coffee to every fan who visited Stars Hollow with us.”

It’s surprising news for fans of Gilmore Girls, a show that remains incredibly popular and is often re-watched every autumn. Not only did Netflix bring back the series with Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, but now that revival will be leaving the streaming service. According to What’s On Netflix – who previously predicted this might happen, even as early as 2022 – the last day to watch A Year in the Life will be November 24, 2026.

Why Gilmore Girls Is Leaving Netflix & What It Means

After ten years, Gilmore Girls is leaving Netflix as its streaming rights expire. While it’s unknown if Netflix tried to renew the deal – which seems probable considering the show’s popularity – Warner Bros. Television owns the rights. It’s likely the series will eventually move to HBO Max, similar to what happened with Friends after it left Netflix a few years ago, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed.

This situation also applies to A Year in the Life. Although Netflix distributed and promoted it as one of their Originals, Warner Bros. Television actually produced it, and they retained the rights for ten years. Considering Netflix is already losing access to the original Gilmore Girls series, keeping A Year in the Life on the platform doesn’t really make sense—it just isn’t as popular, particularly without the earlier seasons to draw viewers in.

Even though Gilmore Girls recently left Netflix, fans still have options! All seven seasons are currently streaming on Hulu and will likely remain there for a while, until Warner Bros. regains exclusive streaming rights. However, the revival miniseries, A Year in the Life, isn’t available on Hulu.

This news is disappointing for fans who were hoping the show would return. After A Year in the Life, people wondered if there might be another season or revival, but that always depended on creator Amy Sherman-Palladino coming up with a new story and being able to reunite the original cast. Most assumed any continuation would appear on Netflix.

Back in 2017, Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino made a deal with Amazon Studios that included a provision letting them potentially create more Gilmore Girls content for Netflix – an agreement which was set to expire in 2025. However, another revival isn’t impossible; it could happen on HBO Max instead. Ultimately, Gilmore Girls fans are dedicated and will likely watch wherever the show appears.
