Netflix has been a leader in growing its selection of anime. Beyond adding popular shows like Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer, they’ve also become the only place to stream critically praised series such as Komi Can’t Communicate and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Netflix is producing another new anime series, and this one appears to be a hit in the making. Created by Hideaki Sorachi, the author of the popular series Gintama, Dandelion already promises plenty of laughs.
Netflix Partners With Gintama Creator For New Anime Series Dandelion
The author of Gintama brings you a new story about Tetsuo Tanba (voiced by Chikahiro Kobayashi) and Misaki Kurogane (voiced by Megumi Han), two angels who are simply trying to manage their everyday jobs.
The work? Tracking down Earthbound souls and laying them to rest.
Join us for the heartwarming and funny story of Dandelion, coming to Netflix this April!
The new series seems to be about two angels who team up to guide spirits to the afterlife. Though that concept could be quite serious and thoughtful – similar to the excellent but overlooked anime Haibane Renmei – the promotional poster and the fact that Hideaki Sorachi is involved suggest Dandelion will be a more fun and upbeat adventure.
Although Gintama has similarities to traditional action-packed anime like Dragon Ball Z, it frequently makes fun of those same conventions. This unique approach is a big reason why Gintama is considered one of the most hilarious anime from the 2000s.
Even though the author is trying a more serious tone, the new promotional poster – featuring two over-the-top angels riding a single bicycle – suggests the story will still be full of playful chaos.
Dandelion Could Be Anime’s Next Great Drama-Comedy
Despite being famous for humor, Hideaki Sorachi’s Dandelion has a surprisingly strong dramatic core. The basic idea – angels guiding spirits to the afterlife – is naturally weighty, even when delivered with a comedic touch.
The title, Dandelion, immediately suggests the series might have real emotional depth. Dandelions are delicate and don’t last long, and that imagery easily connects to the fragility of life. This hints that while Dandelion will likely have comedic moments, it could also be a surprisingly poignant and heartbreaking anime.
Netflix is promising a funny and touching story for the show’s main characters, and everything suggests it will deliver.
Netflix’s Anime Offerings Are Seriously Impressive
Trigger/CD Projekt
Netflix is doubling down on anime with its new series, Dandelion. Although it doesn’t have as many anime titles as dedicated streaming services like Crunchyroll and HiDive, Netflix is quickly becoming known for high-quality anime programming.
Anime series created for Netflix, such as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Devilman: Crybaby, are considered some of the best anime ever made, and they’ve set a very high standard. It’s still unclear whether the new series, Dandelion, will be able to reach that same level of success.
