Netflix has obtained the rights to the ’80s cop show “T.J. Hooker,” but the revival won’t follow the path some fans envisioned. Contrary to expectations, it appears that Netflix plans to transform this story into a movie rather than a series, and it won’t be darkened into a gritty crime drama as initially anticipated. Instead, the reboot is expected to adopt an action-comedy style, drawing inspiration from the success of “The Naked Gun” in theaters right now. Originally airing for five seasons on CBS, “T.J. Hooker” starred William Shatner and can currently be streamed on Tubi, but no production timeline for the reboot has been announced yet.
Netflix is said to have enlisted writers Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel for their version of the feature-length series T.J. Hooker. The team behind this project includes producers Sophie Cassidy, Matt Crespy, Adrian Askarieh, and Alex Westmore. At present, there’s no news on who will take on the roles, but the original actor who played T.J. Hooker left some substantial footsteps to follow. William Shatner portrayed the tough-as-nails sergeant who was back in uniform after losing a fellow officer in duty. He then focused on mentoring new recruits, played by Adrian Zmed, April Clough, and Heather Locklear.
In many instances, Hooker’s steadfast moral principles and unwillingness to yield shaped the narratives. Yet, the initial series embraced violence in a manner that might not resonate as strongly with contemporary viewers. Consequently, the plotline may need adjustment to align with current sensibilities, or Hooker could be transformed into a comic relief character. Let’s hope finding that balance will prove simpler in a film than in an extended series.
In its original broadcast, the TV show “T.J. Hooker” had a relatively brief run compared to network television norms, with just 91 episodes produced. Consequently, it failed to reach syndication and is rarely shown in reruns today. Additionally, the one-hour running time of the series wasn’t conducive to the flexible scheduling that cable TV introduced in later years. However, there are still devoted fans who are thrilled about its revival after four decades.
Regarding Shatner, there’s no definite news about his involvement in the remake at the age of 94, but he has shown support for numerous sequels and reboots based on his previous works. Given his recent decrease in public appearances, it’s plausible to speculate that this could be an exception.
Before Sgt. Hooker can return to the streets of Los Angeles, several unanswered questions remain, as there’s no production timeline or release date announced yet. For the time being, fans can catch up with the original T.J. Hooker series streaming for free on Tubi.
