Netflix Retcons Stranger Things & Risks Even More Plot Holes After Divisive Series Finale

The final season of Stranger Things is sparking a lot of debate, and Netflix might be adding to the controversy by changing established story details and creating new inconsistencies. While Season 5 had a lot of anticipation, the ending is proving to be uneven. It isn’t as poorly received as the Game of Thrones finale, but it does have significant problems, mainly because the show’s backstory isn’t handled well. Details about the Upside Down, Vecna, and the Mind Flayer either don’t quite add up or are resolved too easily.

Beyond the plot holes and confusing parts in the final season of Stranger Things, the show also changes previously established details. From how old Holly Wheeler is to what the Upside Down actually is, things don’t quite add up, and it’s becoming a significant issue. This problem is likely to continue with the new animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. The trailer suggests the show will further complicate the timeline and consistency of the series.

After Season 5’s Upside Down Problems, Stranger Things Introduces New Lore In Its Spinoff

As a big fan of Stranger Things, I was excited to see the trailer for Tales From ’85. It’s cool to see the Hawkins crew back together, and the new monsters from the Upside Down looked interesting. But I’m a little confused about when this spinoff takes place – right between seasons two and three. It doesn’t really make sense to introduce all these new creatures and lore if we never see them again in the main show. I mean, we don’t encounter anything like the Demogorgon or that huge monster near Will Byers after season two, so it feels a bit disconnected.

The animated series introduces creatures that the main characters never acknowledge, which will likely be a recurring issue for this new show. It’s hard to consider the animated content as official because it clashes with events in the original story. It’s already frustrating that Stranger Things Season 5 seems to ignore the Demogorgons, Demodogs, and Demobats that should be present in the final battle. Now, the show also has to explain why these monsters were absent throughout the first five seasons.

Tales From ’85 Brings in a Character Who’s Never Mentioned Again

Beyond introducing new monsters that appear only once, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 is also adding a new character named Nikki. Netflix announced the arrival of this “tough, mohawk-wearing gal” at the Annecy Film Festival last summer (according to The Hollywood Reporter). We finally see her in the trailer around the middle, as the group discovers a vine that’s “mutating.”

Nikki’s supportive stance hints she’ll help the group with the mystery, which is odd considering she’s never mentioned again. It doesn’t quite add up that someone who might be important in a battle against the Upside Down would simply disappear, and the show’s history suggests they wouldn’t ignore such a loss after the impact Eddie’s death had on Dustin. It seems likely Nikki will end up being another plot point that doesn’t quite make sense within the show’s overall story.

Stranger Things’ First Spinoff Is a Risky Move for the Franchise

The new show, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, was a gamble from the start, and early trailers are already showing why. After a disappointing ending to the main series, this first spinoff needed to be a solid addition to the Stranger Things universe. However, the show’s placement in the timeline creates a fundamental problem. No matter how good the story is, it’s likely to clash with established events. Ideally, it will explain the fate of the new monsters and characters introduced, but many fans will likely see it as changing previously established facts. This is a concern because it doesn’t bode well for the future of the franchise and its potential for expansion.
