Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery have agreed to merge in a deal valued at a massive $82 billion. You may have already heard about it!
This deal mainly involves the film and television industry, but it also covers Warner Bros. Games and everything under that umbrella – including game studios like NetherRealm Studios (known for Mortal Kombat), Rocksteady Studios (the creators of the Batman Arkham series), and Avalanche Software (who made Hogwarts Legacy), as well as all their games and related properties.
This is a huge purchase, but it looks like Netflix isn’t very interested in the gaming portion of the company – it seems to be a minor consideration for them.
During an earnings call, co-CEO Gregory Peters explained that they didn’t factor in any value from WB Games, as it’s a small part of the overall business.
He does acknowledge the publisher’s successes, naming Hogwarts Legacy in particular.
Peters mentioned the company has excellent facilities and a talented team, suggesting a potential benefit. However, he clarified that they haven’t yet factored this potential into their financial projections.
It appears the gaming part of the deal wasn’t a major reason for the acquisition; it’s more like it came along as part of the package.
WB Games has faced some challenges recently, including studio shutdowns and unsuccessful game launches like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus, which have impacted the company’s performance.
Despite recent challenges, games like LEGO titles and Mortal Kombat consistently sell well, and Hogwarts Legacy has been a massive hit. This shows WB Games has strong potential. The big question is whether the company can achieve that potential now that it’s under new ownership, assuming the acquisition goes through.
