Netflix is experiencing a shift in its TV offerings. While popular original series like Stranger Things and Bridgerton are preparing to return with new seasons, the platform is also losing several shows it previously licensed. Following the departure of HBO content, shows like Supernatural and Arrow are leaving Netflix, and more series from The CW are expected to follow. However, Netflix recently added all seasons of a critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning drama to help balance these losses.
I just finished binging all eight seasons of Homeland now that it’s landed on Netflix, and wow! This Showtime thriller, which originally ran from 2011 to 2020, really lived up to the hype. It was a critical favorite for years, racking up Emmy nominations, and it’s got a seriously devoted following. If you haven’t checked it out yet, now’s the perfect time – the complete story of Carrie Matheson, the complex CIA operative, is available to stream on Netflix in the US and several other countries.
Netflix added the series Homeland at a perfect time, especially since its lead actress, Claire Danes, just appeared in a new Netflix thriller. Danes starred in The Beast in Me alongside Matthew Rhys, and that show is currently the most popular series on Netflix in the U.S. So, recommending Homeland to viewers who enjoyed The Beast in Me is likely to be a hit.
Unlike many shows, Homeland significantly changed its storyline after its initial seasons. The first two seasons center around a CIA officer with bipolar disorder (played by Claire Danes) who suspects a returned prisoner of war (Damian Lewis) is secretly planning a terrorist attack. Once that storyline concludes—though Lewis’ character makes a brief reappearance later on—the show shifts its focus to new narratives.
Following the initial storyline, Homeland shifts its focus to the missions of Carrie Matheson as an undercover agent. Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin remain central to the show’s drama throughout its eight seasons, appearing in every one of the 96 episodes. No other actor appears in more than 58 episodes.
Besides Claire Danes and Damian Lewis, the show Homeland also featured Rupert Friend, Maury Sterling, F. Murray Abraham, and Morena Baccarin throughout its seasons.
