Netflix has long recognized how popular anime is, both by producing its own original series and by offering a wide range of well-known classics. It’s natural that they’re now focusing on shonen anime – a hugely popular genre – and have already started with original adaptations like Sakamoto Days, as well as hosting hits such as Dandadan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Dragon Ball Daima, and One Piece. This month, Netflix is adding another beloved series from Weekly Shonen Jump to its growing collection.
For years, Gintama has been beloved by fans for its clever mix of comedy and action. The anime is coming to Netflix on January 15th, though it’s currently unknown how many episodes will be available. You can already watch Gintama on Hulu and Crunchyroll in North America – Crunchyroll has the entire series, while Hulu offers around 150 episodes. It’s common for anime to be available on multiple streaming platforms, and Gintama is no different. This unique story is sure to attract new fans when it arrives on Netflix this month, no matter how many episodes are included.
Gintama Continues, Sort Of

The original Gintama anime was incredibly popular, running from 2006 to 2018 with over 350 episodes. It gained a following by playfully poking fun at other popular action anime, all while delivering its own exciting story. Although the main series ended in 2018, it recently returned with a spin-off called Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class. This new anime, which premiered late last year, reimagines the familiar characters in a school environment. With just twelve episodes, the spin-off proved there was still strong interest in the world of Gintama.
Good news for Gintama fans! Besides coming to Netflix, a new movie, Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames, will be released in Japanese theaters on February 13th. It’s a remake of a popular story arc from the anime. While it’s not yet confirmed if the movie will be shown in North America, many expect it to arrive here after its release in Japan. Even though a new anime series hasn’t been announced, it’s clear fans are eager to revisit the world of Gintoki Sakata.
