Netflix has become increasingly popular recently, largely thanks to its investment in animated movies and series. Titles like KPop Demon Hunters, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, The Mitchells Vs. The Machines, and Nimona have been huge hits for the streaming service. Netflix continues to develop many original animated projects, and their next film will offer a darker, reimagined take on a well-known story. They’re revisiting Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, bringing a fresh perspective to this classic tale.
I recently learned that a new take on the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory story is coming to Netflix in 2027! It’s called Charlie Vs. The Chocolate Factory and it sounds really interesting. Apparently, this film explores what happens after the original story, with Willy Wonka facing the consequences of his actions during that first factory tour. He’s trying to reopen his factory, but Charlie, now a teenager played by Kit Connor, might not be too happy about it. Taika Waititi is taking on the iconic role of Willy Wonka, and Jared Stern (who directed The LEGO Batman Movie) and Elaine Bogan (Netflix’s Trollhunters) are directing. They just released a first look image, and it gives a great feel for the animated style of this new version.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Returns

Kit Connor, who will voice the character Charlie in the upcoming Netflix film, shared his excitement about joining the world of Wonka. He was particularly drawn to the film’s concept art and the directors’ vision, which he says beautifully captures the magic of the original story while also feeling new and original. Connor also noted that the film portrays a fun and familiar version of London, and believes audiences are in for a delightful surprise.
Netflix has revealed details about a new animated movie that continues the story of Willy Wonka. Years after the Golden Ticket contest, Wonka (played by Taika Waititi) has been in prison for turning a child into a blueberry. Now released, he’s back at his factory hoping to bring joy to a gloomy world. However, a group of kids – led by teenager Charlie Paley – are planning to break in and steal a valuable Wonka Bar to save their homes from being taken away. Like others before them, these kids will quickly discover that Wonka’s factory holds more surprises – and challenges – than they bargained for.
I’m absolutely buzzing to share that Taika Waititi – yes, the voice of Willy Wonka! – is incredibly excited about this new animated adventure. He says directors Jared and Elaine have a really fantastic, yet respectful, vision for the story, and he feels honored to bring Wonka to life. He’s always loved the character, and getting to voice such an iconic, quirky, and slightly mischievous candy maker is a dream come true for him. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s also taking on a mystery role in the upcoming The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender – he’s really becoming a huge name in everything he does!
Roald Dahl’s stories are famous for Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory from 1971, but that wasn’t the only adaptation featuring the eccentric factory owner and the children who visited. The recent 2023 film Wonka starred Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka, showing his life before he became famous and opened his incredible, yet mysterious, chocolate factory.
