Stephen King fans are used to TV and movie adaptations of his books being a mixed bag. But in 2016, the adaptation of his complex sci-fi novel was a huge hit. Readers had been requesting this series since the book came out in 2011, and it originally premiered on Hulu. Now, it’s coming to Netflix for the first time, offering a wider audience the chance to enjoy this fantastic show.
Let me tell you about 11.22.63, a really intriguing miniseries starring James Franco as Jake Epping, a divorced teacher who gets a shot at changing history – specifically, preventing the assassination of JFK. It originally came out on Hulu way back in 2016, and since then, finding it has been a bit of a hassle. It’s popped up on Tubi and other places, but mostly you had to rent or buy it. But good news! As of January 7, 2026, 11.22.63 is finally hitting Netflix in the US, making it much easier to check out. I highly recommend giving it a watch if you’re a fan of time travel stories!
Jake Epping, a divorced English teacher from Lisbon, Maine, is given an incredible opportunity by his friend Al: to travel back in time to 1960. Al convinces Jake to go on a mission to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. But as Jake builds a new life for himself in the past, he risks jeopardizing the mission. He has to discreetly investigate the events and people surrounding the assassination while simultaneously establishing a believable identity to avoid drawing attention to himself.
What Does Stephen King Think of ‘11.22.63’?

Hulu
As a huge Stephen King fan, I was really interested in the 11.22.63 miniseries. I know adaptations always have to change things, and it was great to hear that King himself was cool with the creative choices made by J.J. Abrams, Bridget Carpenter, and Bryan Burk. He was even an executive producer on the show, so he was right there with everyone during the whole process! He actually told Fast Company a while back that, despite the changes, they really managed to capture the heart of what he was trying to say in the book.
I appreciate adaptations of my work that aren’t simply copies. I actually prefer when they take creative liberties – that feels more true to the story’s intent, and I fully support it.
Look for 11.22.63 to debut on Netflix on Jan. 7, 2026.
