It’s a shame these two funny movies are disappearing from Netflix right before the holidays, even if critics didn’t love them. They’re silly, over-the-top, and sometimes ridiculous, but consistently hilarious thanks to a really talented cast.
If you’re a fan of the comedies Daddy’s Home and Daddy’s Home 2, you’ll want to watch them on Netflix soon! Both movies are leaving the streaming service on December 9th, so you only have a couple of days left to enjoy them. The films are known for being over-the-top and funny. The first one follows Brad (Will Ferrell), a kind-hearted stepdad, as he tries to bond with his wife’s children, only to have his confidence shaken by the return of their cool and capable ex-husband, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg). The sequel sees Brad and Dusty working together to create the perfect Christmas for their kids, but their newfound friendship is threatened when both of their fathers arrive and stir up trouble.
They’re A Ratings Nightmare, But Absolutely Worth A Watch
Okay, let me tell you, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are an absolute blast together on screen! Their chemistry really makes this movie, even when the story feels a little… loose. It’s not a tightly plotted masterpiece, and it doesn’t always lean into the comedic potential it has, but honestly, I didn’t think it was as bad as the 30% Rotten Tomatoes score suggests. Several reviewers seem to agree. One critic pointed out, and it’s true, if you loved their dynamic in The Other Guys, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here. And an audience member nailed it – don’t overthink it, just go with it! It’s a fun, silly Christmas movie for adults, though maybe not quite as hilarious as their previous collaboration. Still, I’d say it’s worth checking out.
The sequel, aptly titled Daddy’s Home 2, received even lower ratings, scoring only 21%. Steven Prokopy of Third Coast Review noted that a more subtle approach could have made the characters feel more realistic, but the film relied too much on predictable, low-effort humor that didn’t often land. However, Rich Cline of ContractMusic had a different take, comparing it to the first film and stating it playfully uses familiar tropes to tell a lighthearted and amusing, though not brilliant, story. Cline found it to be enjoyable and a good way to unwind, with some genuinely funny moments mixed in with the more obvious jokes.
Honestly, if you just go into these movies expecting pure, lighthearted fun – and not some cinematic masterpiece – you’re going to have a blast. And let’s be real, isn’t that exactly what you want during the holidays? I know I’m all about easy, joyful entertainment this time of year!
