Netflix is creating a new television series based on Assassin’s Creed, and it could potentially revitalize a previously disappointing $240 million movie. The Assassin’s Creed series is actually quite popular, with many of its 14 main games considered excellent examples of the genre and highly regarded video games.
Many video game adaptations struggle to succeed, and the 2016 Assassin’s Creed movie was unfortunately one of them. However, the new Netflix series might be the chance for the franchise to finally get a good adaptation.
Netflix Is Bringing Assassin’s Creed To Television
Netflix is developing a series based on Assassin’s Creed, hoping to capitalize on the current trend of successful video game adaptations seen on platforms like Prime Video and HBO Max. While Netflix has had success with animated series like Castlevania and Arcane, it currently lacks a widely appealing live-action show based on a popular game.
Netflix announced it’s making a live-action Assassin’s Creed series in July 2025. However, Netflix and Ubisoft have been talking about adapting the game since 2016 (according to Jobsnhire). While we don’t know when it will be released, Netflix has shared a few details (via Netflix).
Laura Marcus, Zachary Hart, Lola Petticrew, and Toby Wallace have joined the cast, though their roles haven’t been revealed yet. Robert Patino (known for his work on Westworld and Sons of Anarchy) and David Weiner (Halo, The Killing) are creating and running the show.
As a huge fan, I’m getting a little frustrated with Netflix! They’re being super secretive about the new series, and their updates are as basic as they come. It’s like they’re deliberately trying not to tell us anything!
Assassin’s Creed is a fast-paced, action-packed series about a hidden conflict between two groups. One group wants to control the future by manipulating people, while the other fights to protect freedom. The stories take place during important moments in history, as the characters struggle to influence the course of human destiny.
This storyline is typical of many Assassin’s Creed games. It remains to be seen whether the show will tell a completely new story or if it will base its plot on one or more of the existing games, possibly combining elements from different titles.
Why Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Will Be Better Than The Movie
The world of Assassin’s Creed was always better suited for a longer story, like a TV series. The core idea – that the historical events we see are actually memories being relived by someone in the present day – could even be the basis for a whole science fiction film on its own.
Beyond the science fiction elements, a movie version of Assassin’s Creed struggles to fully explore both the present-day story and the various historical periods. A major strength of the Assassin’s Creed games is the opportunity to interact with famous historical figures during important times in their lives.
A television series based on Assassin’s Creed could vividly recreate historical periods like Renaissance Italy, the Crusades in the Holy Lands, or the American Revolution. This would also allow the show to fully develop the compelling conflict between the Templars and Assassins.
