Netflix’s Dark New True Crime Series is Officially a Hit With 4 Million Views

Netflix is well-known for its compelling true-crime documentaries. They’ve produced popular series on high-profile cases, like the trials of Sean Combs, the Menendez Brothers, and Amanda Knox. Shows like Making a Murderer and Tiger King have also turned ordinary people into famous figures. More recently, Netflix has delved into crimes connected to social media, with The Tinder Swindler being a major success. Now, a new true-crime series focusing on social media is quickly becoming another big hit for the streaming service.

Netflix’s new true-crime documentary, The TikTok Killer, quickly became a hit, racking up over four million views in its first week. That’s 600,000 more views than the true-crime series A Friend, a Murderer: Limited Series. It was one of the most popular shows on the platform, only surpassed by The Dinosaurs and Bridgerton.

The TikTok Killer Remains A Massive Hit for Netflix

This Netflix true crime series is captivating because of the mystery surrounding the disappearance and the gradual uncovering of the killer’s identity, keeping viewers hooked. In 2023, 42-year-old Ester Estepa vanished in Spain. When authorities couldn’t find her, her family began their own search. This led them to José Jurado Montilla, a travel blogger who had filmed videos with Ester while traveling around Spain. Though he claimed they parted ways, his blog revealed he was lying, and the truth began to emerge.

This documentary cleverly pieces together TikTok videos to reveal how a family learned the truth about the death of their loved one, Ester, whose body was discovered in a secluded location. The legal proceedings are still underway, as is common with recent documentaries. The story centers on José Jurado Montilla, who was previously arrested twice and convicted in connection with six murders. Though initially sentenced to 123 years, he was released after only 28 years. Now, thanks to activity on his TikTok account, new evidence has emerged, bringing him back to trial in connection with Ester’s death.

It’s remarkable that the true crime documentary has already been viewed over four million times on Netflix in just one week. While series like The American Murder, Tiger King, and Making a Murderer were hugely popular, The TikTok Killer is quickly becoming a sensation, especially with younger viewers who are active on TikTok. The documentary’s connection to a real-life case in Spain has boosted its popularity, and it’s still too early to tell how impactful it will be in the long run.
