Netflix’s Devil May Cry Creator Adi Shankar Talks Season 2 And Creating His Own Video Game (Exclusive)

Animation fans can look forward to a new season of Devil May Cry on Netflix starting May 12th. The series promises a unique story of conflict between brothers. Recently, egmr.ru spoke with the show’s creator, Adi Shankar, about the upcoming season, its complex villains, and what’s next for characters Dante and Virgil. They discussed the show’s return, which builds on the existing world where the human and demon realms are locked in a fierce battle.

Shankar has experience adapting video games into animated series, having previously worked on shows like Castlevania, Castlevania: Nocturne, and Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. He’s also a longtime fan of Devil May Cry, even dressing up as Dante’s son, Sparda, at conventions. The first season of the Devil May Cry anime focused on Dante, but the upcoming second season will explore the story from both Dante’s and his complicated brother Virgil’s perspectives. We began our discussion by talking about Arius, the villain in season two, and his often-debated role within the Devil May Cry universe.

The Black Sheep of Devil May Cry

Many fans consider Devil May Cry 2 the weakest game in the Devil May Cry series, and Arius was its main villain. However, series creator Adi Shanker doesn’t view the game as a failure. In a recent discussion, he actually praised it, saying he doesn’t believe the idea that Devil May Cry 2 is the “black sheep” of the franchise. He particularly liked Dante’s outfit in that game and noted that while some gameplay elements weren’t fully developed, there was clear progress. He also considers Lucai a strong character and prefers to focus on the positive aspects of his work.

Season two will introduce many new characters, including Arius, and a lot of them come from the original video game. When asked about balancing these new faces with established ones, Adi Shankar jokingly referenced the movie Spider-Man 3, saying they wanted to avoid overstuffing the story. He actually enjoyed Spider-Man 3 and believes it’s a commonly held opinion! While they could include a large number of characters, it’s important to make sure the audience connects with them emotionally. Shankar aims to approach the series with the same careful planning and discipline as director Christopher Nolan.

Dante Vs. Vergil

The ongoing rivalry between Dante and Vergil in the Devil May Cry series has always divided players, but character artist Ruan Zhong (Shankar) found it difficult to pick a favorite. As someone who focuses on realistic emotions and psychology in his work, he feels Vergil’s constant struggles and challenges give him an edge in this conflict.

Many viewers might not know Vergil’s story: unlike his brother Dante, Vergil was raised by the series’ villain, Mundus, and spent most of his life in the demon world, Makai. This upbringing clearly shows in his hardened appearance. Throughout the game series, Vergil has always been a complex character, walking the line between hero and villain, and it looks like that will continue in the new Netflix series.

The Future of Adi Shankar

We definitely had to ask about a potential third season of Devil May Cry, and as of right now, it hasn’t been officially announced. While Shankar didn’t say outright that he’d be back to direct, he did drop some intriguing hints! He talked about always looking forward and focusing on what’s next, saying he’s got a ‘big picture’ in mind and is still actively working towards it. It sounds like he’s definitely thinking long-term and has a lot more to offer this series if given the chance!

I was really surprised to hear that Shankar’s been working on his own video game! He mentioned a trailer is coming in about two months, and he joked people will be shocked. He even told me he was nominated for a Game Award last year, but Neil Druckman won. Now, he’s playfully aiming to surpass The Last of Us with his own game.
