Netflix’s Disturbing New True Crime Movie is a Huge Streaming Hit

Netflix is now the leading platform for captivating true crime content. While true crime documentaries are hugely popular, several true crime movies are also gaining a lot of attention and going viral. Recently, the documentary series The TikTok Killer was a major hit, detailing the investigation of a missing woman and the travel blogger connected to her disappearance. Now, a new fictionalized true crime movie has arrived on Netflix, and it’s just as compelling.

The new Netflix documentary, Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story, quickly became a hit with viewers. It started at number three in the U.S. on May 16th, but according to FlixPatrol, it climbed to number one on May 18th and stayed there until Saturday, when it moved to number two.

Why Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story is Worth Watching

I just finished watching Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story, and it was intense! It’s not a new Netflix film, actually – it originally aired on Lifetime in 2024, and 48 Hours even did an episode about the case. But it recently landed on Netflix and everyone’s been watching it! Jana Kramer plays Morgan Metzer, and Austin Nichols is her ex-husband, Rodney. It’s a really gripping story.

Morgan and Rodney’s relationship ended tragically after 11 years of marriage. They met as teenagers and married in 2009, but after experiencing the loss of a child to a heart defect and Rodney’s brother to leukemia, Rodney became abusive. He blamed Morgan for the abuse, leading her to file for divorce in 2020. Just a month after the divorce was finalized, Rodney disguised himself and broke into Morgan’s home, where he physically and sexually assaulted her and stole from her. Shockingly, he later returned to the scene and pretended to help as if he was rescuing her.

The case took a strange turn when Rodney claimed a concerned neighbor had contacted him. However, police quickly noticed inconsistencies in his story, and their focus shifted to him as the prime suspect. The film continues to be deeply disturbing, even for Morgan, who recently told Today that watching it still evokes strong emotions. She reflected on the experience, saying certain scenes made her sad, while others left her amazed by her own resilience and the incredible strength of women.
