Netflix’s Dungeons & Dragons TV Show Has Another Major Challenge to Overcome After This 10/10 Release

There’s a lot of buzz around the new Dungeons & Dragons show coming to Netflix. It’s set in the popular ‘Forgotten Realms’ world from the tabletop game and is being produced by Shawn Levy and showrunner Drew Crevello. With the recent movie, Honor Among Thieves, not performing well enough for a sequel, and another D&D series canceled by Paramount+, fans are especially excited to see what Netflix does with the franchise.

The upcoming live-action Dungeons & Dragons show will face several hurdles. It needs to avoid harmful clichés associated with the Drow and navigate common issues within the fantasy genre. Given Netflix’s history of canceling fantasy series, there’s also concern about its longevity. Plus, a very successful fantasy show on Prime Video is raising the bar, making it tough for even a great series to succeed.

The Mighty Nein Presents a New Challenge for Netflix’s Dungeons & Dragons Show to Overcome

I’m absolutely hooked on The Mighty Nein, the new spinoff of The Legend of Vox Machina! It started streaming on November 19th, and honestly, I think it’s quickly becoming the best fantasy series on Prime Video. As a big fan of the original Vox Machina, I was excited to see where they’d take the story, and it’s amazing! It jumps ahead 20 years, introducing us to a brand new continent, a fresh group of characters, and a whole new set of political struggles. Even after just three episodes, it’s clear this show is something special – not just one of the best fantasy releases we’ve seen in a while, but one of the best adaptations of Dungeons & Dragons ever made for TV.

Given the success of both The Legend of Vox Machina (with perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes) and the well-received Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Netflix has a solid foundation for its live-action D&D series. While those projects created high expectations, they weren’t unrealistic. A TV show can reach more viewers than the movie Honor Among Thieves, and it has more time to develop its story. It will also likely be less animated in style than The Legend of Vox Machina, but longer. However, The Mighty Nein storyline presents greater challenges – it’s darker, features longer episodes, and is designed for streaming. Because of these factors, it will be tough for the Netflix show to surpass it.

The Legend of Vox Machina & The Mighty Nein Bring up a Harsh Reality for a Live-Action D&D Show

The popularity of The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein is great news, but it also creates tough competition for Netflix’s upcoming Dungeons & Dragons series. It also highlights a difficult trend for fantasy shows in general: many projects launched after Game of Thrones have been canceled or haven’t lived up to expectations. The success of these animated series suggests that animation might be a more reliable format for fantasy content, a point supported by hits like Arcane, Castlevania, and Helluva Boss.

Animation seems like a perfect fit for Dungeons & Dragons. The role-playing game is all about finding the right mix of exciting danger and funny moments. While live-action can achieve this too, comedy often works better in animation – it feels less forced. Animated shows can still deliver powerful, serious stories alongside the humor.

There’s Still Hope for Netflix’s Upcoming Series

As a huge fan of both Dungeons & Dragons and great storytelling, I’ve been following the development of the Netflix series closely. Honestly, the animated series The Mighty Nein really set the bar high – it’s a fantastic adaptation. That success definitely puts some pressure on the live-action show, but I’m still optimistic. Honor Among Thieves proved people want to see D&D brought to life, and the fact that the Netflix show is set in the Forgotten Realms opens the door to potentially seeing characters like Drizzt Do’Urden, which is something I, and many other fans, have been hoping for! I think Netflix can really learn from what The Mighty Nein does well and make some smart choices. If they play their cards right, this show could even be better than what Prime Video is doing with Critical Role!
