Recently, it looked like the future of the Yellowstone universe was uncertain. Following Kevin Costner’s departure from the original series, the show struggled to finish strongly. Adding to the concerns, creator Taylor Sheridan announced he was moving to NBCUniversal. However, excitement has been renewed with the trailer for Y: Marshals, a new series centered on Kayce Dutton. Another spinoff, The Dutton Ranch, featuring Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, is also moving forward, and will include actors Ed Harris and Annette Bening.
I’m really looking forward to the next seasons of those shows, but it feels like a long wait! I’ve been trying to find something to fill the gap, and while rewatching Yellowstone is tempting, I wanted to see what else was out there. I was excited to see Netflix, as they wrap up Stranger Things, really getting into Westerns. I started watching The Abandons, a new drama, and I’m hooked! It’s actually doing really well – it’s currently number four on Netflix’s Global Top 10, right after the first season of Stranger Things.
Set in the 1850s, the series centers on Fiona Nolan (Lena Headey, from Game of Thrones), who adopts four children after struggling to have a family of her own. She’s built a good life for them in Oregon, but it’s disrupted when wealthy landowners arrive and claim ownership of her property. Fiona is a determined woman, and she refuses to give up her home without a fight, leading to a major conflict.
Since its release on Netflix on December 4th, The Abandons has been viewed for a total of 37 million hours. These impressive numbers are likely to increase in the coming weeks as more people have time to watch shows during the holidays. However, the show may need a boost in viewership to secure a renewal for another season.
The Abandons Has Been on a Bumpy Road

Just three weeks before filming was scheduled to finish on The Abandons, Kurt Sutter left the project. Although he’d originally conceived the idea years earlier, before working on Sons of Anarchy, he and Netflix couldn’t agree on the show’s direction, leading to creative differences. Otto Bathurst and Rob Askins then completed the series, which premiered on Netflix a little over a year later.
Problems during filming seem to have affected the quality of The Abandons. It currently has a 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which means it’s generally considered a poorly reviewed show. However, Netflix isn’t overly concerned with critic scores; they’ll base their decision about a second season on how many people actually watch the Western series.
