While some streaming services have focused on creating entirely new science fiction universes, Netflix has excelled at adapting existing stories. They’ve successfully combined this strength with a classic sci-fi series, expanding it into a larger, more dramatic, and character-focused show. This often overlooked series is truly one of Netflix’s best sci-fi offerings.

As a sci-fi fan, I really enjoyed Netflix’s Lost In Space, which ran from 2018 to 2021. It’s a reboot of the classic 1965 show, but with a fresh take. The original was inspired by The Swiss Family Robinson, and this new version updates that whole ‘family stranded in a strange land’ idea for today’s viewers. It follows the Robinson family after their spaceship has a bit of a mishap and crash-lands on an alien planet – all set in a future where humans are trying to colonize space. It’s a fun ride!
After being unexpectedly diverted from their planned route, a family must rely on each other to overcome dangerous landscapes, mysterious creatures, and their own internal disagreements. As the story unfolds, the show expands to explore larger science fiction themes, including galactic power struggles, the challenges of artificial intelligence, and the moral questions surrounding space exploration. Lost In Space effectively combines exciting, large-scale adventures with a personal story of family, allowing each character to grow as the dangers increase.
How Netflix’s Lost In Space Is Different From The Original

Although both the original 1960s series and the 2018 Netflix version of Lost In Space start with the same basic idea, they’re very different shows. The older series was known for its standalone adventures and over-the-top science fiction. The newer version, however, is more realistic and tells one continuous story. A key change is how the Robinson family is portrayed – they’re much more complex and believable characters now.
