Hardly anyone could easily forget the excitement that accompanied Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story when it was released recently, as the Ryan Murphy series was quickly granted another season for a third episode.
At that point, it had been established that the third season would center around Ed Gein, with Charlie Hunnam, a renowned actor from Sons of Anarchy, slated to headline as the antagonist.
According to Variety’s latest reports, we can expect the third season of Monsters to air later this year.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but share some exciting news about the Monsters series! Not only are we looking forward to the upcoming third season, but there’s more! It seems that a fourth season is already being planned, with filming potentially commencing in autumn 2025. Can you believe it? The anticipation is already building!
It appears that, if the rumors are correct, Ryan Murphy might be delving into older unsolved cases as the seasons progress.
In the first installment of this series, we delve into the life of Jeffrey Dahmer. The following season shifts its focus to the tragic story of the Menendez brothers and their act of murdering their parents, which occurred in 1989.
1957 saw a significant rise in infamy for Ed Gein, as law enforcement discovered the beheaded corpse of hardware store proprietor Bernice Worden at his residence.

Instead, Murphy plans to delve deeper into history by exploring the Lizzie Borden case, a trial that took place in 1892 where Borden was found not guilty for the axe murders of her father and stepmother.
In the heart of Fall River, Massachusetts, I found myself becoming an unwanted figure, as the infamous case surrounding my alleged actions garnered widespread attention. With no other suspects brought to trial for the murders, the weight of suspicion fell heavily upon me.
In contrast to the previous themes explored in the Monsters series, the potential Lizzie Borden-centric storyline for season 4 seems to offer the greatest room for diverse perspectives and interpretations.
As the investigation into the murder of Andrew and Abby Borden was drawing scrutiny due to perceived inadequacies, along with a scarcity of solid proof and numerous speculations about the killer’s identity, the Netflix series had ample room for imaginative interpretation.
The influence of the Borden case has extended over time, finding its way into popular lore through rhymes and multiple versions, even being transformed into a 2009 musical.
I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing my story unfold on-screen too! In 2014, it was brought to life in the TV film titled “Lizzie Borden Took an Axe,” featuring the talented Christina Ricci. The next year, a sequel and limited series, “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles,” were developed, giving me more chances to captivate audiences through the small screen.
In 2018, Lizzie featured Chloë Sevigny portraying Lizzie Borden and Kristen Stewart as Bridget Sullivan, their household servant who resided with them.
In the movie, the storyline unfolds showing the two characters falling in love, ultimately culminating in their joint participation in the murders, an idea that has been suggested on various occasions throughout the years.
As for where Murphy is heading with his re-telling of the real-life crime tale, only time will tell. Regarding the casting decisions and the formal announcement about its renewal, we’ll need to stay attentive as well.
