Netflix’s New Animated Fantasy Movie Proves Nothing Will Beat KPop Demon Hunters For Years

Since premiering on Netflix on June 20, 2025, KPop Demon Hunters has become a major hit, and it continues to be popular. Shortly after its release, the movie even had a limited run in theaters as a sing-along experience, and it has since partnered with companies like McDonald’s for promotions. The enduring appeal is likely boosted by the fact that a sequel, KPop Demon Hunters 2, is already planned, though fans won’t see it until 2029.

Okay, so KPop Demon Hunters was really killing it, especially on Netflix. But then this animated movie, Swapped, came out on May 1st, 2026, and for a little while, it actually looked like it might challenge KPop Demon Hunters‘ dominance. Honestly, though, the buzz around Swapped died down pretty quickly, and it became clear that KPop Demon Hunters is just untouchable. It’s still the king, as far as I’m concerned.

Swapped Seemed To Be Beating KPop Demon Hunters At Its Own Game

The animated film Swapped features Ollie, a Pookoo voiced by Michael B. Jordan, who unexpectedly switches bodies with a bird – a natural enemy of his species. The story explores themes of self-discovery, friendship, and understanding, and it’s been well-received by viewers. Notably, Swapped quickly outperformed KPop Demon Hunters in at least one key area.

Between May 4th and 10th, Swapped received 38.7 million views – more than KPop Demon Hunters ever achieved in a single week, and a new record for the most views a Netflix movie gained in one week. Although this didn’t make it the overall most popular title, or even necessarily more popular than KPop Demon Hunters in total, it was a remarkable accomplishment and suggested it could potentially become the most-watched movie. However, the situation has shifted in the weeks since then.

The Popularity Of Swapped Has Since Died Down

As a fan, I’ve been keeping a close eye on how Swapped is doing, and the latest numbers from Tudum are a little concerning. It started strong with amazing views the first week of May, but things have slowed down since then. The week of May 11th-17th brought in 26.4 million views, which is still great, but the most recent week, May 18th-24th, only saw 16.1 million. While millions of views are nothing to sneeze at, especially so soon after release, it definitely looks like the initial excitement is starting to fade.

The new movie hasn’t resonated with audiences as strongly as KPop Demon Hunters did. KPop Demon Hunters quickly gained a dedicated fanbase with merchandise, high streaming numbers, and a lot of excitement, but Swapped, while popular, didn’t reach that same level of cultural impact. This difference in reception could significantly affect the future of the Swapped franchise.

KPop Demon Hunters Remains Untouchable

It looks increasingly likely that KPop Demon Hunters will remain undefeated, especially now that Swapped, while close behind, can’t seem to overtake it. This makes sense, considering Swapped was a pleasant and well-acted story with a good cast. KPop Demon Hunters, however, offered a more expansive narrative, memorable music, and thought-provoking themes – like the potential relationship between Rumi and Jinu – that really resonated with fans.

Honestly, after seeing how well KPop Demon Hunters has done, I’m curious to see if anything can actually knock it off the top spot. Netflix has really gone all-in to keep the hype alive too – those fun collaborations were brilliant, and I’m already excited for the sequel they’ve got planned!

Beyond keeping fans engaged, Netflix has also promoted the movie in surprising ways, like featuring KPop Demon Hunters prominently at their special Netflix House events. This strategy could help the movie become one of Netflix’s most popular titles ever.
