As a huge fan of crime shows, I’m really excited about this new thriller coming to Netflix. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to completely shake up the conventions that shows like Reacher on Prime Video have become known for – and in a really gritty, unexpected way!
Similar to Reacher, this new Netflix show is based on a popular book series. If successful, it could become a long-running, major franchise for Netflix, comparable to Reacher and Bosch. While the books have been made into movies before, those films weren’t particularly memorable – much like the Jack Reacher movies.
Even though it has some things in common with Reacher, this Netflix crime thriller has everything it needs to stand out and become well-known in its own right.
Netflix’s New Detective Thriller Will Be Reacher’s Anti-Thesis
Netflix will release its series based on Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole detective novels on March 26, 2026. Like the character Jack Reacher, Harry Hole is a solitary detective with impressive skills in solving crimes. However, the two characters have very different personalities.
While Jack Reacher is a controlled and wandering hero who always seeks justice, Harry Hole, created by Jo Nesbø, is a troubled detective battling addiction and consumed by his investigations.
The trailer for the new Netflix series reveals it will depict Detective Hole’s battle with alcoholism and his relentless, all-consuming drive to catch criminals, even when it destroys his personal life.
Check out the trailer below:
A key difference between Harry Hole and Jack Reacher is how they handle tough situations. Reacher is usually shown as incredibly strong and able to overcome obstacles with force. While Harry Hole also gets into fights, he doesn’t always win, and often bears the physical marks of his losses.
Detective Hole is the opposite of Jack Reacher, sharing more in common with Rust Cohle from the show True Detective.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole Is Exactly What The Crime Thriller Genre Needs Right Now
Most crime thrillers follow a similar formula to shows like Reacher, with strong, silent heroes solving case after case while always doing what’s right. While some, such as Bosch, give their leads a few flaws, they generally don’t explore the darker sides of those characters very deeply.
Netflix’s upcoming series based on Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole will likely present a detective who isn’t clearly good or bad, offering a fresh take on the classic crime drama.
As a big fan of crime dramas, I’m really excited about Netflix’s Detective Hole. It’s still early days, and whether it’ll become as popular as Reacher remains to be seen, but everything looks good so far. What’s especially promising is that Jo Nesbø, the author of the original books, is heavily involved in writing the show, and they’ve cast some fantastic actors like Tobias Santelmann and Joel Kinnaman in the lead roles.
