Netflix is a great place to discover hidden movie gems, and it can turn almost any film into a success if viewers find it. It’s become a haven for movie fans, offering everything from documentaries and foreign films to original movies that skipped theaters but found a large audience through streaming. Many interesting Netflix films, like the recent releases The Rip (with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) and David Fincher’s The Killer, delve into the more complex and unsettling aspects of human nature – movies you might not have encountered otherwise.
Netflix’s new thriller, 180, is quickly becoming a hit around the world. It’s currently the second most popular movie on the platform, just behind Thrash, and landed in the Top 10 movies in the U.S. during its first week.
180 Becomes Massive Netflix Hit Even Without Major Stars
180 is a South African thriller film written and directed by Alex Yazbek. It follows a father, Zak, as he drives his son home when they become trapped in a traffic jam in Johannesburg. While stuck, they witness a gang member commit a murder. Unlike others who flee, Zak remains with his son, but is then pulled from his car and violently attacked. A gunman appears, but Zak and his son manage to escape unharmed.
Later, while driving with his son, Zak is in a car accident. Remembering the previous conflict, he reacts with anger and a physical fight breaks out with the other driver, who pulls a gun. Tragically, Zak’s son is shot during the struggle. Feeling let down by the police, Zak decides to take matters into his own hands and seek revenge, as his wife desperately prays for their son’s recovery in the hospital.
The movie also illustrates how Zak’s mental state rapidly deteriorates. Just when he desperately needs to support his critically ill son, he discovers his insurance has unexpectedly lapsed. Frustrated by what he sees as bureaucratic delays, Zak decides to handle the situation himself, leading him down a dangerous path. Reviewers have drawn comparisons to films like Death Wish and Falling Down, noting the similarities in themes of revenge and a man losing control.
Featuring performances by Prince Grootboom, Noxolo Dlamini, and Danica De La Rey, the film 180 has earned positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics highlighting its blend of exciting action and thoughtful themes. This balance sets it apart from other films in the same genre, and it’s proving to be another successful title for Netflix.
