The Korean movie The Great Flood has quickly become a hit, reaching the top spot on Netflix’s U.S. movie charts after its release on December 19th. It’s already been viewed almost 30 million times in just five days, proving its international popularity.
The Great Flood Is Netflix’s Latest International Hit
In 2021, Netflix sparked a major trend with the huge success of Squid Game, which captivated audiences during pandemic lockdowns. The series introduced American viewers to television and movies from Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, and other parts of Asia like never before. The show follows people like An Na, a researcher, and Hee Jo, a security professional, as they fight to survive a massive flood that’s engulfing their apartment building. As they struggle, questions arise about why Hee Jo is so determined to rescue An Na, and what forces are at play behind the disaster.

In a review, Variety’s Dennis Harvey notes that the movie tries to do a lot, resulting in some ideas feeling incomplete and hurried given its length.
