The popular adventurer Lara Croft is back on Netflix with a new season of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Just in time for the release on December 11th, and before the movies Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life leave the platform on January 1st, Netflix dropped the second and final season of its Tomb Raider animated series.
You can now watch all eight episodes of the show on Netflix, completing its brief run of sixteen episodes which started in 2024. The series is inspired by the popular Tomb Raider video game franchise and picks up the story after the 2018 game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Hayley Atwell voices Lara Croft as she deals with a difficult past while embarking on a dangerous global adventure. In the second season, Lara is in a desperate race to find valuable African artifacts before a tech genius can use them to cause chaos around the world.
Why Is Netflix’s Tomb Raider Series Ending After 2 Seasons?
Only two months after its second season began, Netflix announced the cancellation of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. While Netflix didn’t explain the decision, it likely came down to low viewership numbers – the show didn’t stay in the Top 10 for very long after its release – and generally unenthusiastic reactions from viewers.
The show initially received mixed reactions. While critics gave it a fairly positive score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, general audiences weren’t as impressed, giving it only a 33% rating. Viewers found the plot slow and lacking substance, and felt the villains and supporting characters weren’t very engaging. A major point of criticism was the portrayal of Lara Croft herself. Many fans felt the show significantly changed her personality, making her seem weaker and less independent than the Lara they knew and loved.
As a huge fan, I’m really eager to see what everyone thinks of Season 2! Right now, the reviews are still coming in, and there aren’t any official ratings on Rotten Tomatoes yet. I’m hoping it ends strong and fixes any issues from the first season, but we’ll just have to wait and see if it sticks the landing.
What’s Next for the Tomb Raider Franchise?
The Netflix series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft has finished after releasing its second season on December 11th, but this isn’t the end of the Tomb Raider story. Several new projects are planned, including a new video game and a live-action series for Amazon Prime. Sophie Turner will star as Lara Croft in the Amazon series, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the creator, writer, and executive producer. The series was officially approved in May 2024, and a release date hasn’t been announced yet. There are also reports that Sigourney Weaver is being considered for a role, though details are still unknown.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
