Netflix unveiled the initial trailer for the second live-action season of “One Piece,” hinting at the introduction of fresh heroes and villains who will join the Straw Hat Pirates as they venture into the Grand Line. However, not all updates have been positive, with a campaign emerging against the casting of Charithra Chandran. In response to this campaign, Rob Colletti, the actor portraying Wapol, voiced his disapproval on social media towards those protesting against Chandran.
On Instagram Stories, Wapol from the live-action ‘One Piece’ expressed his astonishment at how certain vocal sections of the fandom can accept a rubber pirate, reindeer doctor, and talking fish, yet object to Vivi being portrayed by a woman who isn’t white. He emphasized that Charithra, chosen personally by Oda, has a deeper insight into the characters than many others, including those who criticize her without seeing her impressive performance in the show.
Wapol’s Rage
In simpler terms, Rob went on to say that Wapol didn’t beat around the bush. He pointed out that Nefertari is Egyptian and Egypt is in the Middle East. The land of Alabasta borrows elements from Middle Eastern and Southern Asian cultures. So, it seems odd to complain about the actor playing the role not being white, when it doesn’t make sense at all. It’s quite absurd, isn’t it? Representation matters. Casting Charithra doesn’t change the character; instead, it honors Oda’s original concept. Protecting One Piece by crying over this is less crucial than preserving the authenticity of the character according to your perception of who it should be.
For individuals who can set aside their prejudices and biases, Charithra’s performance in “One Piece” is truly STUNNING and will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the fandom. Not only is she incredibly talented within the show, but she stands out as EXTRAORDINARY. Moreover, beyond her exceptional acting skills, Charithra is an exceptionally kind and generous person whom I have been fortunate to know and befriend. She embodies all the virtues that the heroes of “One Piece” are meant to represent, and we are truly blessed to have her as part of our storytelling team.
We should all be THRILLED with Charithra’s contribution to this fandom because the show improves with her involvement! If that doesn’t spark excitement in you, then perhaps you don’t fully grasp the essence of One Piece. But for those who can still believe in a world filled with devil fruits, giant sea monsters, talking snails, and other creative elements designed by Oda for everyone on this planet… the issue isn’t with the casting; it’s with your own limitations. Such reactions are narrow-minded, cringe-worthy, and you ought to feel embarrassed.
