Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 Will Likely Follow the First Season’s Most Controversial Plot

The Netflix live-action version of One Piece is being praised for finally overcoming the history of disappointing anime-to-live-action adaptations. It demonstrated that a successful adaptation is possible when made by people who truly respect the original story. However, it’s not a flawless adaptation. Adapting a series as massive as One Piece – with over a thousand chapters and episodes – meant condensing years of story into a single season. This required changes to the plot to fit the first major storyline into an eight-hour show.

Watching the live-action adaptation, I was really surprised by how they handled Monkey D. Garp. In the original anime and manga, he doesn’t become a big player until much later – you don’t even find out he’s Luffy’s grandfather until episode 314! But the show brought him in early, making him a key figure constantly after Luffy. It definitely split the fanbase, and now that a character with a similar role is coming up in season two, a lot of us are worried we’ll see that same ‘chase’ dynamic all over again.

One Piece Season 2 Might Portray the Same “Police and Thief” Dynamic

From the haze of Loguetown’s docks, justice rolls in! Captain Smoker has arrived!

The second season of One Piece will introduce Smoker, a Marine Captain who oversees Loguetown. He’s known for being relentless in capturing pirates, with a reputation for not letting any escape his area. In the original manga, Smoker starts chasing Luffy after seeing the trouble he causes in Loguetown, and his story largely revolves around pursuing Luffy and the Straw Hat crew. However, this pursuit becomes less important as the manga progresses. Given that the first season on Netflix added scenes to highlight the rivalry between the Marines and pirates by giving Garp a larger role, Smoker’s part in the live-action series might also be expanded beyond what’s necessary.

Giving Smoker, a fan-favorite character from the beginning of One Piece, more screen time isn’t a bad idea. However, because the live-action series has a shorter format, it might mean other parts of the story have to be cut. The first season had a good storyline, but some viewers wished there was more action. While season two seems to be addressing that, spending too much time on Smoker pursuing the Straw Hats could prevent other important plot points from developing.

The live-action format could cause issues because it needs to tell the story quickly. This often means focusing on a few characters more than the original story does, and it risks repeating some of the problems from Season 1. Specifically, it might cut out smaller, important plot points and even affect the exciting action scenes fans enjoy.
